UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
DAVID GONGDON, OF NEW BERNE, NORTH CAROLINA.
STAVE FOR BARRELS.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 229,099, dated June 22, 1880.
Application filed May 11, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID GoNeDoN, of New Berne, in the county of Graven and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staves for Barrels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in staves; and it consistsin taking a straight stave and cutting a slit in each end any desired distance toward the center, which slits, when the staves are put together for the purpose of making a barrel, form the bulge of the barrel, and at the same time openings for the purpose of Ventilation, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of a barrel embodying my invention.
A represents the stave, which is perfectly straight its whole length, and which has a slit, B, cut in each end any desired distance toward its center. These slits, when the staves are put together for the purpose of making a barrel, allow the ends of the staves to be compressed together sufficient] y to form the bulge of the barrel; and as the slits are only partially closed an opening of any desired length is left through each stave for the purpose of ventilation.
I am aware that this same result has been accomplished by others in different ways-as, for instance, by cutting away the stave on each side of each of its ends. This method requires four different cuts by a single saw, or else machinery speciallyadapted for the purpose, whereby by making staves straight and cutting a slit in each end, as here shown, onehalf of this work is done away with.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim- A straight stave, A, which has a slit, 18, cut through its end toward the center, substantially as shown and described;
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of April, 1880.
DAVID GONGDON.
