UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CHARLES H. BRAZEAL, OF TYE RIVER DEPOT, VIRGINIA;
HORSE-DETACHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,087, dated June 22, 1880.
Application filed April 24, 1880. (No model.) I i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BRAZEAL, of Tye River Depot, in the county of Nelson and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Detaching Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a device adapted for use in connection with harness, for the purpose of enabling a horse to be detached from a vehicle.
The device consists, mainly, of a buckle having a sliding tongue to which is attached a strap that is held by or is accessible to the driver, and which being pulled will retract said tongue and allow disconnection of portions of the harness, so that the horse may go free.
The invention also includes means for connecting the tongues of both the breast-collar and girth-buckles, and for retracting them simultaneously by traction on one and the same pull-strap.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of harness provided with my improved attachment. Figs.2,3, and 4 are enlarged views of my improved buckle detached from the harness proper, but having certain straps and bars attached.
The buckle A (shown detached in Figs. 2, 3, 4) has a movable cross-bar, a, to which the tongue bis attached. The ends of said crossbar enter slots or recesses c in the side bars of the buckle, and springs may be placed in said slots or recesses for the purpose of pressing forward the bar a and its attached tongue b, so as to prevent accidental retraction of the same and detachment of the strap through which the tongue passes. A pull-strap, B, is
attached to the cross-bar a, and in practice extends back over the dasher of the vehicle, and is held by or is accessible to the driver. Such form of buckle is shown in Fig. 1 applied to a harness for connecting the breeching-strap G and breast-collar D, also the ends of the girth E.
Thepull-strap Bis connected with the tongue of the collar-buckle by means of a bar, F, and to the latter is pivoted another bar, G, which is arranged diagonally and provided at its lower end with a stud or claw, d, that is connected withor adapted to engage the cross-bar a of the girth-buckle. The said diagonal bar G is pivoted to a metal loop, H, attached to and pendent from the hame-strap G. The means of pivotal connection between said bar Grand loop H, is a stud, f, which passes through alengthwise slot in the bar. By this arrangement it will be seen that if the strap B be pulled with the requisite force the bar F will. draw the tongue I) of the collar-buckle backward and release the breast-collar, while the diagonal bar Gr, acting as a lever of the first-class, will turn and also slide on its fulcrum f, and press the tongue of the girth strap buckle downward, and thereby loosen the girth simultaneously with the breast-collar, so that the horse will be released from the harness. By this means the horse may be instantlydetached from both harness and vehicle in time of danger, or when haste or other cause may require it.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with a harness breastcollar and breeching or side straps, ot' the buckle A, having a sliding tongue and a pullstrap, connected and arranged as shown and described.
2. The combination of buckles having sliding tongues with the breast-collar, side straps, and girth, the bar F, and diagonal lever-bar G, pivoted to the latter, also provided with a stud or claw and fulcrumed as shown and described, to operate as specified.
CHARLES HENRY BRAZEAL.
