BRUSH RETAINER Filed July 5, 1943 19 INVENTOR.
WILL JAM A. R//VGLER Patented July 1943 William A. Bingler, Wayne, Pa., assignor to Rubberset Company, Newark, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application July 5, 1940, Serial N0. 343,973 3 Claims. (Cl. 20G-15.1)
This invention relates to improvements in folders or retainers adapted to enclose the main body and bristle portion of a brush.
Wrappers or retainers of various types have been devised heretofore for use on paint brushes or the like but these have all been subject to one or more of a number of objections. It has been a primary purpose of the present invention to overcome all of these objections and to provide e. brush retainer which is simple and inexpensive to produce, is easy to apply to and remove from a brush, and is adapted to retain the brush in the best possible condition in the course of shipment and handling. The improved retainer may also be used advantageously for keeping the brush in condition for reuse after it has been put into service. Its construction is sturdy and such as to substantially exclude the access or movement of air around the bristles which would have a tendency to cause the bristle body to become sti after the brush has once been used.
The improved retainer is preferably formed of relatively stili cardboard or pasteboard or the like and is creased or scored or otherwisevformed to facilitate folding along desired lines. A feature of the present invention is the formation of the retainer blank in such a way that when properly folded around the body and bristles of a brush it will form a sturdy enclosure which will not become distorted upon relatively rough handling. Toward this end there is provided a pair of panels of substantially the same dimensions one of which is arranged to be disposed against each face of the body and bristle portion of the brush. Thus, a panel extending completely across the retainer is provided at both front and back.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of very simple but effective means for fastening or retaining the folder in position `around the brush body. The arrangement is Fig. 2 is an isometric view of the folder in partially folded condition, without the brush.
Fig. 3 is an isometric view of the folder as completely assembled around a brush, and Y Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view along the line -d'of Figure 3. v
Referring now to the drawing, the blank constituting the improved retainer and which is adapted to be appropriately folded to enclose the bristle body of a paint brush is preferably formed of pasteboard or cardboard or the like and is preferably appropriately scored or creased to facilitate folding along the desired lines. 'I'he scoring or creasing serves to divide the blank into panels or sections and various extensions. Thus, the blank has a main central panel or section I 0 which may, if desired, be rectangular in form, although it is preferably constructed in the form of a trapezoid with its lower edge Il slightly shorter than its upper edge I2.
Extending from one of the side edges of the main panel Ill there is a triangular side panel I3 while from the opposite side of the main panel there extends a similar triangular panel M. The two side panels are preferably isosceles triangles with their bases, forming the edges I 5 land It, inclined slightly withrespect to the edge I2 of the main panel. Another panel I l, formed as an extension of the side panel I 3, is preferably of substantially rectangular form panel I8, formed as an extension of the side panel It, is preferably of substantially the same form and dimensions as the main panel I0. This, as will be explained, enables the panel or extension I 8 to completely overlie the panel I 0 when the folder is assembled around a brush. At the wide end of side panel I3 th'ere is formed, as a foldable extension, a small tab I9. A similar tab 2t is provided at the wide end of side panel It. 'The tabs It and 2d are each of a length somewhat less than half the length of the edge i2 of the main panel.
Attached tothe main panel at the edge I2 is an end panel 2i. having a cut-out portion or aperture 22 at an intermediate point. The main part of the panel ZI is of a width equal to the length of thc edge I2 and is of a length equal to slightly more than the length of the edges I5 and I6 of the side panels. An extension 23 of the end panel is adapted to be bent or folded at right angles to the main portion of the end panel. This extension is provided with a tab 24 of reduced width having rounded outer corners, as indicated at 24a. vSecured to the main panel along its shorter edge Il is another end panel while a largerA in form. The length of this panel is preferably,
though not necessarily, about the same as the length of the main panel I0. A slot or elongated opening 26 is provided transversely of the panel 25 at an appropriate point, this being of a length sufficient to receive the tab 24, in the manner to be explained.
In the use of the folder india; assemmy about a brush, the handle 21 of the brush is passed through the aperture 22 in the end panel 2I and the bristle body 28 of the brush is placed upon the main panel I 0. Said panels Il and Il are then folded upwardly at right angles to the main panel and the extension I8 is folded over the bristle body. Next, the extension I1 is folded over the extension IB and the two tabs I9 and 20 are folded inwardly over the shoulders formed at the base of the handle of the brush. End panel 25 is now folded upwardly about the edge II and laid flat against the extensions I1 and I8. End panel 2| is then foldedupwardly at right angles to the main panel and the extension 23 of this upper end panel is bent downwardly over the end panel 25. The tab 24 is now passed through the slot 26 in the end panel 25 and the assembly of the' retainer about the brush is thus completed.
i In forming the extensionv I8 of a length equal to the width of the main panel III and folding this extension beneath the extension I1, in the manner explained, a sturdy construction is provided Which will resist deformation in response to lateral pressure upon the assembled retainer. This is due to the fact that the edge 29 of the extension Il abuts against the corner provided at the edge 30 between side panel I3 and extension I1.
It will be understood, of course, that numerous variations may be made in the specific form and construction of the various elements of the folder. The size and shape of the several panels and extensions may vbe varied somewhat without departing from the principles of the invention. 'I'he folder may, obviously, be accommodated to brushes of different shapes and dimensions. Tabs I 9 and 20 should be of such length and form as not to interfere with or close the aperture 22. If desired, the side panels I 3 and Il might be made trapezoidal rather than triangular in form. However, if the retainer is formed of suilicient length, so that the bristles of the brush need not extend fully to the lower end, adequate room for the bristles will be provided `within the retainer by the simpler triangular side panel construction. This construction, furthermore, provides for a more effective closure at the lower end ofthe assembled retainer.
The terms and expressions employed herein have been used as terms of description and not of limitation.
