Description

A. A. DUER. Caster.
No. 229,033. Patented June 22,1880.
A;AUEATEDL1ER- N-FETERS. PNOTD-UTHOGRIPHHI, WLSRIIGTO D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. ADGATE DUER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
CASTER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 229,033, dated June 2.2, 1880. Application filed February 28, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, A. ADGATE DUER, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters 5 and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being bad to the accompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the caster. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the same.
My invention has reference to furniturecasters; and it has for its object to furnish a caster which, while possessing all the advantages of high-priced articles of its class, is of such construction as to admit of its being made at the minimum cost.
My caster belongs to that. general class in which the pivot is integral with or rigidly attached to the part which is inserted in the table or chair leg, or other article of furniture iinder which the caster is used, in contradistinction to that class in which the pivot is integral with the yoke or horn and revolves in a suitable sleeve or socket.
In the former class, to which my invention belongs, the pivot is riveted below the yoke, necessitatingits being made of malleable metal whose softness made the pivot very liable to wear. Moreover, the flange and socket being heretofore made integral with the rivet, and hence of malleable metal, the cost of the device was materially increased, while its efticiency was not enhanced in the least.
In carrying out my invention I form the flange and socket of cast-iron, which is cast directly upon the pin after the attachment of the horn or yoke.
The head is formed on the pin, (which may be of steel or hard metal,) and the pin being inserted in place in the yoke, the shank and flange are cast upon it.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the shank or quasi socket, having the usual thread a and flange B, which latter is somewhat flattened on opposite sides, as at b, for the attachment of a spanner or wrench.
G is the horn or yoke, in which the roller D is mounted 011 a pin, a.
E is the pivot, having a head, 6, below the yoke O.
In making the caster the pin E, if of steel or hard metal, is brought to the shape shown, and is inserted through the yoke 0. They are then placed in position in a mold and the socket and flange are cast directly upon the pm.
I am aware that casters in which the pivot, flange, and socket are integral are old, and such I do not claim. Since the pivot must be riveted or headed, this construction necessitates the making of the parts named of malleable metal, resulting in an expense which by my method of construction is wholly avoided, while admitting of the use of a steel or previously headed pivot-pin.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
A caster whose socket and flange are cast integral, and rigid1y secure in the casting a previously-headed center pin or pivot, substantially as described.
