" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. ADGATE DUER, oF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
CASTER.
sPEcIEIcA'rIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,820, dated June 14, 1881,
Application filed Septemberm 21, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. ADGATE DUER, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain newr and useful Improvements in the Manufacture ot' Casters; and l hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exaetly described as t'ollows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, and Fig. 3'is a topplan view, of the same.
My invention has reference to furniture-cast' ers; and it consists in a method of consructingthecasterembodyingcertainimprovements ou that employed in making the caster for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 229,033 were granted me June 22, 1880. In the said device the socket and ange were castintegral upon the headed center pin, which was'previousl y thrust through the yoke. This mode of constructing the caster, while result ing in the production of a thoroughly satisfactory article, was somewhat expensive, as considerable care was requisite in centering the pins in the molds.
rIhe object of my present invention is to avoid this cost and furnish a easter equal in all respects, so far as merit is concerned, to the patented device.
In thc accompanying drawings, A is the socket, and E the iiange, cast in one piece, as shown. The socket is furnished with a thread, a., and at the top is formed a transverse groove, d.
B is the yoke, between the arms ot' which the roller Gis mounted, as usual, on apivotpiu, b.
The center pin, D, is a machine-made rivet, on which is formed a head, e, the piu being` ot' a size to lit closely in the socket A.
In putting the parts together the pin D is passed through the hole in the yoke B, and is then driven through thesocket A. lhe pro- It will thus be seen that, aside from the rivf eting of the pivot b, the hand-labor involved in constructing the caster is confined to a single blow ou the end ot' the pin D, far less than was required to center the pins in the molds in constructing the patented device hereinbefore referred to, and a great saving in time results.
Instead of heading the pin above the socket, the bore of the latter may be slightly con` tracted, so that the pins are rigidly secured therein in the act of driving them home. In this case the bore may extend wholly or but partly through the socket.
It will be understood that thedescribed Inode of constructing the device leaves nothing to be desired in point of economy. The pins or rivets are staple articles ot commerce, and the rein ainiug parts may be cheaply cast.
Wha-t I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Themethod herein described of constructing casters, cousistingin casting a socket and Hange integral and providing a shouldered and headed center pin or pivot, and combining the said parts and the yoke by passing the pivot-pin through the yoke and into the socket, with its shoulder abutting against the under side of the 11a-nge, and then riveting the pin and socket rigidly together, as set forth.
A. ADGA'IE DUER.
