Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
JOHN TEMPLE, OF MIDDLETOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO TEMPLE, MILLS & STOUT.
WATER-WHEEL.
Specication of Letters Patent No.
T all whom 'it may concern i Be it known that I, JOHN TEMPLE, of
Middletowm in the county ,of Butler `and hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of the scroll chest. Fig. 2 is a view partly in axial section and partly in elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section at Fig. 2.. y
This is an improvement in what are known as central discharge or vertical re` action wheels and the invention consists in a cert-ain form and disposition of buckets whereby the forces of percussion reaction and gravity are made fully available.
The crown D of the wheel for a distance inward of about one half the radial depth of the buckets is a horizontal plane and thence to the back of the buckets is an inverted conic frustum of about 452 (or the where a cycloidal or circular arc trending outward as 1t descends (see Fig. 2) so as to 22,902,` dated February 8, 1859.
present at the lower part of the discharge orifice an apron (3) adapted to receive and applythe gravitating force of the water. The recurving of the buckets. (at 2) by enlarging the outlets prevents the gorging of the A assages under the diminished flow toward the discharge, incident toa central discharge `wheel and prevents any pressure of water against the backs of t-he buckets.`
I am aware that cent-ral discharge water wheels having buckets recurved horizontally or in the planeof rotation have been long in use. I therefore do not claim such a mode of constructing wheels, but my invention involves import-ant improvements on t-he cyma-reversa bucket whereby I obtain in this class of wheels the `advantages of percussion and reaction and in additon thereto a `suflicient retention of` the water to avail the force of gravity.A
I claim as new` and of my invention herein- The construction and arrangement in central discharge water wheels of buckets E, which have the describedco'mpound cyma reversa and downward and outward curve whereby the water acts on the wheel by percussion reaction and gravitation and escapes freely without back action as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOHN TEMPLE. Attest:
