JOHN BRICKETT, OF DANFORTH, ILLINOIS.
END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,029, dated June 22, 1880,
Application filed October 13, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN BRIOKETT, of Danforth, in the county of Iroquois and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Grates for Wagon- Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of endgates which are made detachable for convenience in unloading the contents of the bed.
The object of this invention is to produce an end-gate which can be readily and quickly detached, and which, when attached, will be firmly secured in position.
To this end my invention consists of a slotted plate provided with a transverse diaphragm to receive one end of the gate, upon the opposite end o'i' which is pivoted an L-shaped strap, slotted near its free end to receive a staple, and provided with a spring-actuated catch to secure the strap, and with it the end-gate, to the opposite side of the bed.
My invention also consists in certain details described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure Us a perspective of one end of a wagonbed provided with my end-gate. Fig. 2 is a similar viewof the pivoted strap and its springactuated catch on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3
ing its transverse diaphragm; Fig. 4., a section of the end-gate, having its end slotted to fit over the diaphragm in the groove of the bracket-plate.
A represents a wagon-bed of the usual construction, having secured to one of its sideprovided with a vertical groove to receive one end of the gate B. Toward the upper end of this bracket-plate is a diaphragm, b, extending across it, the gate being provided with a corresponding slot to receive the same, whereby, when in position to close the end of the bed, the gate will be prevented from working up or down in the groove of the plate.
To the opposite side-board and upon its inner side, at a distance from its end corresponding with the thickness of the end-gate, is secured an upright or bracket, (3,f0rming an abutment for the end-gate, to prevent its being forced inwardly. Upon the outside of and near this end of the gate is secured a plate, D, to which is pivoted the -shaped strap E, so that it can be, when securing'the gate in position, swung around so as to embrace the end and side of the bed. The free end of this strap is provided with a longitudinal slot corresponding with a staple, F, secured to a plate, F, upon the outside of the side-board.
To the strap, at a suitable distance from its slot, is pivoted a catch, G, which, when the strap is in position upon the staple, will drop through the latter and lock the strap on the same.
H is a headed bolt or pin, forming the pivot for the catch G, and extending outwardly beyond said catch, so as to form a bearing for a coil-spring, h, Wound about it, and having one of its ends secured by passing it through a perforation in the strap, as shown at h, and clinched upon the opposite side. The other or free end of the spring h is extended at right angles to the pivot H, so as to bear upon a stud or projection, 2', upon the catch.
By this construction it will be seen. that the catch G is thus made spring-actuated, so that it will, when in any position, have a tendency to press downwardly, and when held in the staple it will be prevented from slipping out of the same by jarring, &c., when the wagon is in motion, thereby securin g the catch against accidental detachment.
In detaching my end-gate the operation is the stud on the catch, raise it out of the staple,
and with the other hand swing the strap around until it is released from the side-board, and with the same movement the end of the gate to which the strap is attached is swung outwardly, thereby detaching its opposite end from the grooved bracket.
In order that the end of the gate resting in the groove of the bracket may be readily detached, it is rounded upon its inner corner, so that it will not impinge against the-inner wall of the groove. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the end-gate of a wagon-bed, of a longitudinally-slotted plate,
13, provided with a diaphragm, b, to receive nally-grooved plate, B, provided with a diaone end of said gate, a strap, E, upon its other phragm, 1), plate F, staple F, in combination end, provided with a spring-actuated catch, with an end-board having attached thereto a 15 whereby the gate is prevented from vertical pivoted and slot-ted strap, D E, provided with 5 movement and held rigidly in position to close a catch, G, pivot H spring h, and stud i, subthe end of the Wagon. stantially as and for the purposes described 2. The combination, with the hinged strap and set forth. E, staple F, and hook or catch G, of a depress- JOHN BRIGKETT ing-spring upon the pivot of said hook to hold 10 it in position, so as to prevent its accidental Witnesses:
detachment when looking the strap. J. P. WHITING,
3. A wagon-bed provided with a longitudi- J NO. G. ELLIOTT.
