UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
()DILON GRISE, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 228,993, dated June 22, 1880. Application filed February 16, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ODILON (Music, of Springfield, county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Thill-Oouplings, which improvements are fully set forth in the annexed specification and in the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to thill-couplin gs which are constructed with a view to prevent their rattling; and it consists in adapting to an axleclip of ordinary construction a thill iron or coupling constructed with a wide oblong bolthole transversely through it, providing therein sufficient room for said bolt for a surrounding elastic packing for it and for a pressureblock, and having a setscrew or screw-bolt operating through one end of said oblong bolthole at right angles to said bolt against said pressure-block, to cause the bolt to be tightly secured between said elastic packing and within said wide oblong bolt-hole.
In the drawings, which consist of three figures, Figure l is a sectional view through the line a; m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing one thill-iron support removed. Fig, 3'is the bolt which connects the thill-iron to the axle-clip.
A is the thill-iron provided with theoblong boltliole b. O is the axle-clip, and c e are the thill-iron supports thereon. i is a screw-bolt. o is a pressureblock. s s are sections of elastic packing, and tfis the connecting-bolt.
I construct the thill-iron A with the oblong bolt-hole b, as shown, and tit the screw-bolt '6 through one end of said bolt-hole, and fit into the latter under the end of bolt 6 the pressureblock 0. Between the under concave edge of block 0 and the lower end of 1 the oblong bolthole I) the bolt t passes transversely through;
but spaceis provided between thelatter-named parts and the sides of bolt t for the interposition between thein 'of the elastic packing s s, lying around said bolt and extending over that portion of it which is within the bolthole I).
The axle-clip G is constructed of the usual form and is provided with the thill-iron supports 0 e, pierced for bolt 15, which is secured therein by a nut in the usual manner.
Thus when the above-named parts are placed, as shown, in the bolt-hole b, and bolt t is inserted through supports cc and through the bolt-hole between the elastic pieces .8 8, said bolt will not come in contact with any part of the thill-iron A, and by screwing bolt 2' down against block 0 bolt 8 becomes tightly compressed between the sides of said elastic packing, and all rattling of parts is prevented.
Myiinproved thill-iron possesses advantages over other thill-irons in which elastic packing is interposed between the outer end of the thill-iron and the axle-clip in that the elastic packing is so protected by being inclosed within the bolt-hole and between the sides of supports 6 c that it is much more durable and all wear thereof can be taken up by screwing down bolt 6.
What I claiin'as my invention is- The combination, with the axle-clip 0, provided with the supports 6 e and with bolt 15, of the thill-iron A, provided with the oblong bolthole I) and the screw-bolt t, the pressureblock 0, and the elastic packing s s, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ODILON GRISE.
