STEM WINDING AND SETTING WATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,987, dated June 22, 1880.
Application filed March 11, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OBADIAH DAVIS, of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented anew and valuable Improvement for Setting Watches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide mechanism of such construction that a watch can be set as well as wound by the stemwinding arbor without the aid of any device working at any other point through the case or requiring the opening of the same, and which is hereinafter fully described, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents a front-plan view of a watch-movement with the dial removed and having the stem, with part of the case, attached, showing my improved mechanism and parts connected with it. Fig. 2 represents a front-plan View of the same, with a horizontal section of the stem. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 represent different parts of same mechanism.
A, Fig. 1, represents a vibrating lever, so constructed that when the winding-wheel d, attached to and controlled by it, is brought into working position with windingarbor wheel h, by depressing said lever in that direction the watch can be wound by the crown D, which connects with and controls said wheel (I by mechanism hereinafter described; but when said vibrating lever is depressed at the opposite end, setting-wheel I), attached to and controlled by it, is brought into working position with cannon-pinion F, which controls the hands, and in this position the crown D will set the hands, but is disconnected from the winding-arbor wheel h, as is shown in Fig. 2.
By my improvement this action of the vibrating lever, connecting it with the winding or setting wheel of the watch, as is desired, is controlled by the crown D, through the stem, without the aid of any device working at any other point through the case or requiring the opening of the same, as is the case in other stem-setting watches.

finding-arbor O, as shown in Fig. 5, is provided with screw-thread m or its equivalent, to fit crown D, spiral spring g, annular rim 2', square I, to engage a small cog-wheel, (not shown,) but which connects with wheel a attached to vibrating arm A, as before referred to.
Lug-collar E, Fig. 6, fits on stem-winding arbor 0, working between annular ring i and spring y, as shown in Fig. 2.
Connecting-lever B, Fig. 3, is provided with a slot, 70, to on gage lug on lug-collar E, screw it, on which it vibrates when in position, caniface 0, to work against small arm 0, a part of vibrating arm A, or some other suitable device to control setting-wheels.
From the above description it will be seen at once that when these different parts of the winding mechanism are placed in their proper position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the stem-winding arbor O is partially withdrawn by the crown D the lug on lug-collar E will engage the conncctin g-lever B,or its equivalent, in the slot 7;, so that the opposite end will be depressed, and the cam-face 0, working against the arm 0, or other suitable device, forces the vibrating arm A, with its setting-wheel b,into position to engage cannon-pinion F, which controls the hands, as shownin Fig.2. The hands can nowbe set at will by crown D, and after the hands are set the spring g, or its equivalent, returns stem-winding arbor (J, connectinglever B, and vibrating arm A into proper position for winding, as shown in Fig. 1.
The object of this connecting-lever B being to connect or disconnect the setting-wheel l) or winding-wheel (1 with the cannon-pinion F or winding-arbor wheel h, as may be desired, by partially withdrawing the stem-winding arbor O, I would not confine myself to the particular form represented in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. Stem winding arbor 0, provided with male or female square, to engage winding mechanism, annular rim i, screw on, spiral spring g, in combination with lug-collar E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
