Description

July 7, 1942.
L. POGLEIN INIE'RLOCK JOINTS FOR GLASS ARTICLES 7 Filed Feb. 1, 1939 INVENT OR.
' ATTORNEY.
Patented July 7, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE INTERLOCK JOINT FOR GLASS ARTICLES Louis Poglein, Jeannette, Pa., assignor to McKee Glass Company, Jeannette, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in refrigerator ware, more particularly to refrigerator ware made of glass by molding, and it is among the objects thereof to produce such ware of two identical parts which, when assembled in the manner of their normal use, will interlock at portions of their engaging or abutting surfaces.
The invention will become more apparent in connection with a description of the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters designate like parts and in which: Fig. 1 is a top plan view of an assembled glass article embodying the principles of this invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical cross-section taken longitudinally thereof.
I have shown a butter box, so-called, of glass, as an illustrative embodiment of the invention. The butter box comprises two identical receptacles numbered l and l a, respectively, having handle or gripping portions 2 and 2a at the respective ends thereof, the gripping portions having flat surfaces 3 constituting abutting faces provided with tongue and groove elements l and 5, respectively.
The primary feature of the invention is the provision of a tongue 4 on the surface 3 of one of the gripping elements of the receptacle, and a groove 5 on the surface 3 of the other projecting gripping portion of the same receptacle, whereby, when the receptacles are assembled in pairs, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the tongues and grooves of the respective receptacles will interact with the tongues and grooves of the cooperating receptacle, which is in superposed relation therewith, thus forming an interlock which prevents lateral displacement of the receptacle in handling.
By the novel construction of placing a tongue and groove on each of the receptacles, I am enabled to produce an article by a single mold which is similarly provided with a tongue and groove on the opposite matrix portions that form the extending handle or gripping elements, thus effecting great economy in the cost of equipment necessary to produce the article, the advantage of which will be appreciated by those familiar with cost of mold equipment in glass manufacturing plants.
It is further to be noted in connection with Fig. l of the drawing, that the tongues and grooves do not extend across the entire face of the gripping portions 2 and 2a. of the receptacles, so that there can be no lateral displacement of the receptacles when assembled in either a longitudinal or transverse direction. Thus, by means of the simple interlocks, capable of being produced by a single mold, refrigerator Ware may be produced in an economical and expedient manner.
Although I have illustrated the invention as embodied in a butter box, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that it may be similarly applied to other forms of glass articles having abutting faces for interlocking them against transverse movement.
I claim:
A household utensil comprising a pair of symmetrically-formed containers each having a plurality of oppositely disposed lateral projections constituting handles, one projection of each container having a tongue and the other projection a groove, which interact to prevent lateral displacement of the assembled containers.
LOUIS POGLEIN.
