8 Claims. (01. 105-185) My invention relates vehicles.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved resilient support and restraint device for a railway truck bolster.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved railway truck having a resilient cushion support for a laterally movable bolster adapted to restrain lateral movement of the bolster and -a tilting restraint device for restraining relative tilting between the bolster and the truck.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved tilting restraint device for a railway truck bolster which is adapted to provide a tilting lateral pendulum motion to the bolster about a predetermined center to restrain such motion.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent and my invention will be better understood from the following description referring to the accompanying drawings, and the features of novelty which characterize my invention will be pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming part of this specification.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan view, partly broken away, of a railway truck illustrating an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side to trucks for railway 'elevational view of the truck shown in Fig. l
partly broken away to illustrate the relative supporting arrangement of the truck frame on the journal boxes; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a railway truck embodying another modification of my invention.
Referring to, the drawings, I have shown .a truck for a railway vehicle provided with a pair of axles ||l supported by wheels II and having journal bearing boxes l2 arranged on each end thereof. A truck side frame I3 is arranged on each side of the truck, and the adjacent ends of these side frames on opposite sides of the truck are connected together by 'end frames H. A pair of spaced apart transversely extending cross ties or transoms I5 is arranged intermediate the ends of the truck between the two side frames l3 and is rigidly supported thereon on bearing surfaces |6 and II, more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The side frames are resiliently supported by coil springs l3 which engage spring seats I9 formed on the side frames 13 and spring seats formed on the Journal boxes l2. One of these springs I3 is arranged on each side of each journal box l2 so that a substantially balanced load is trans-' mitted to the journal boxes l2 on each side thereof. In order to support the vehicle load upon the truck, a center plate 2| is arranged on a laterally movable bolster 22 which is supported on the truck by resilient fluid cushions 23. These cushions 23are of a pneumatic type and each is provided with an upper bolster supporting surface 24 arranged to engage a complementary supporting surface 25 formed on each, end of the bolster. The lower side of each cushion engages a longitudinally extending supporting channel member 26 which is rigidly secured to the transoms I5 and is formed as a surge chamber communicating with the interior of the pneumatic cushion 23- through a valve 21. Air is supplied to the supporting channel member 26 by a suitable tubular connection 28 connected to a reservoir which is supplied with air from air supply for the vehicle brakes. As is more clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the supporting channel member is arranged to support the pneumatic cushion 23 at an angle to the hori- 'zontal inclihed inwardly, so that the axes of the two cushions intersect at a point vertically above the center plate 2|. With such an arrangement, relative lateral movement of the bolster 22 with respect to the truck frame will be resisted by the distortion of the pneumatic cushion 23, and the angular tilted arrangement of the two cushions will tend to center the bolster by a gravity reaction as relative lateral displacement of the bolster with respect to the truck frame will tend to cause the bolster to rise as it distorts the cushions 23. A pair of guard places 29 is secured to the transoms IS in spaced apart relation above complementary guard flanges 3|] secured to the bolster 22 in order to limit the relative vertical movement of the bolster with respect to the truck frame.
In order to prevent or limit tilting of the bolster 22 with respect to the truck frame, I provide a tilting restraint device which includes transversely extending torsion rods 3| journaled in bearings 32 secured to the transoms l5 by clamps 33. A pair of longitudinally extending link members 34 is arranged adjacent each end of the bolster 22, and each of the link arms 34 is connected to the bolster by a universal ball and socket joint 35 which is pivotally mounted on the bolster by a pivot pin 38 which extends through the ball of the joint 35 and is journaled in bearing blocks 31. These bearing blocks are mounted in a supporting bracket 38, and one set of bearing blocks at each end of the bolster 22 is adapted to slide longitudinally in its mountings to provide for relative longitudinal displacement between the supporting bracket 38 and the adjacent ends of the torsion rods 3|. The link arms 34 are formed with clevises 39 at their outer ends and are pivotally secured to the adjacent ends of the torsion rods3| by knuckle pins 40 having axes which extend substantially transversely of the torsion rods 3| at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the torque rods 3| as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 tending to provide a tilting lateral pendulum motion to the bolster ment .of the vehicle with respect to the truck.
Furthermore, relative tilting of the bolster 222 with respect to the truck frame causes one end of the bolster to rise and the other end to fall below normal level position, thereby transmitting substantially equal and opposite torsional forces to the ends of the torsion rods 3! which tend to cause the raised end of the bolster to move downwardly and the lowered end of the bolster to move upwardly, thereby restraining the tilting of the bolster.
In Fig. i, I have shown a modification of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3 wherein the railway truck axles, wheels, frame, bolster, and bolster supports are substantially the same as those shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive. This modified construction is provided with a tilting restraint device which includes a torsion spring rod 3i secured to one of the transoms or cross ties it by clamping straps 83. In order to restrain tilting of the bolster 22 with respect to the truck frame, a link arm 36 is pivotally secured to the bolster adjacent each end thereof by a universal ball and socket joint ll. The outer end of each of the link arms 34 is formed as a clevis 39 which is pivotally secured to an end of the torsion rod {it by a knuckle pin (it the axis of which extends substantially transversely of the torsion rod and slightly at an angle to the longitudinal axis thereof as in the construction shown in Fig. 1. Another link arm member 541 is pivotally secured to the other end of each of the equalizing arms 12 by a universalball and socket joint iii and is pivotally secured tn the other transom it by a ball and socket joint id. A pair of arms 30 and 66 extends substantially longitudinally of the truck frame and transversely of the bolster 22 at each end thereof, such that when the bolster 22 tends to tilt with respect to the truck frame and one end thereof moves upwardly while the other end thereof moves downwardly, the equalizing arms 62 will pivot about the pivot pins 413 to provide for the change in distance between these pins and the outer ends of the link arms 36 and .dLl secured to the torsion rod and to the transom, and the link arms 86 at opposite ends of the torsion rod ill will transmit a torsional force to the rod 3!! acting opposite directions at opposite ends. The to i onal reaction of the rod ill will produce a resisting force which will be tratted through the link arms 3G to the bolster and will tend to raise the end thereof which moves downwardly and to lower the end of the bolster which 'moves upwardly, thereby restraining tilting of the bolster. These cushions are arranged to support the bolster at aaeasee each end thereof on longitudinally extending channel members 28 which are mounted on the transoms it of the truck frame. This tilting restraint device construction is somewhat more simple and more readily adaptable to various truck constructions than that shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, whether or not pneumatic cushions are provided for supporting the ends of the laterally movable bolster on the truck frame.
While I have illustrated and described particular embodiments of my invention, modifications thereof will occur to those skilled in the art. I desire it to be understood, therefore, that my invention is not to be limited to the particular arrangements disclosed, and I intend in the appended claims to cover all modifications which do not depart from the spirit and scope of my inventio What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A vehicle truck having a frame including side frames and a pair of transoms extending therebetween, a bolster arranged between said transoms, means for supporting said bolster on said truck frame for relative lateral and vertical movement therebetween, a tilting restraint de-'- vice including a torque rod mounted on one of said transoms, a pair of arms, means for providing a pivotal connection between one end of one of said arms and an end of said bolster, means for providing a pivotal connection between an end of the other of said arms and the other end of said bolster, and means for connecting the other end of each of said arms to said torque rod with one arm arranged adjacent each end of said rod for pivotal movement about an axis extending substantially transversely of said rod at an angle for providing a tilting lateral pendulum motion centering force to said bolster about a predetermined center.
2. A vehicle truck having a frame including side frames and a pair of transoms extending therebetween, a bolster arranged between said transoms, means including a pneumatic cushion for supporting said bolster on said truck frame, a tilting restraint device including a torque rod mounted on one of said transoms, a pair of arms, means for providing a universal joint connection between one end of one of said arms and an end of said bolster, means for providing a universal joint connection between an end of the other of said arms and the other end of said bolster, said connecting means for at least one of said arms adjacent each end of said bolster being constructed to provide for relative movement longitudinally of said arm between 'said bolster and said arm, and means for connecting the other end of each of said arms to said torque rod with one arm arranged adjacent each end of said rod for pivotal movement. about an axis extending substantially transvemelyof said rod at an angle for providing a tilting lateral pendulum motion centering force to said bolster about a predetermined center.
3. arranged one pair adjacent each end of said bolster,'a pair of torque rods mounted one on each of said transoms, means for providing universal joint connections between said bolster and the end of each of said arms adjacent said bolster, meansfo'r securing the other ends of said arms extending from opposite ends of said bolster on one side thereof to one of said torque transoms, means for supporting said bolster on said truck frame, a tilting restraint device in cluding pairs of arms extending in opposite directions substantially transversely of said bolster arranged one pair adjacent each end of said bolster, a torque rod mounted on one of said transoms, means for providing universal joints between said bolster and the end of each of said arms adjacent said bolster, at least one of said universal joints at each end of said bolster being constructed to provide for relative movement transversely of said bolster to provide for a change in distance between the outer ends of each pair of arms secured to the same end of said bolster, means for connecting the other ends of said arms extending from opposite ends of said bolster on one side thereof to said torque rod with one arm secured to said-rod adjacent each end thereof for pivotal movement about an axis extending transversely of said rod, and means for securing the other ends of said arms extending from opposite ends of said bolster on the other side thereof to said frame for universal movement with respect thereto.

A vehicle truck having a frame including side frames and a pair of transoms extending therebetween, a bolster arranged between said transoms, means including a pneumatic cushion for supporting said bolster on said truck frame and for providing a lateral restraint thereto, a tilting restraint device including pairs of arms extending in opposite directions substantially transversely of said bolster arranged one pair adjacent each end of said bolster, a pair of torque rods mounted one on each of said transoms, means for providing pivotal connections between said bolster and the end of each of said arms acUacent said bolster, means for connecting the a other ends of said arms extending from opposite rods with one arm secured to said rod adjacent each end thereof for pivotal movement about an axis extending substantially transversely of said rod, said connecting means for at least one of said arms adjacent each end of said bolster being constructed to provide for relative movement between said bolster and said arm, and means for connecting the other ends of said arms extending from opposite ends of said bolster on the other side thereof to the other one of'said torque,
rods with one arm secured to said other rod adjacent each end thereof for pivotal movement about an axis extending substantially transverse- 1 of said other rod.

A vehicle truck having a frame including side frames and, a pair of transoms extending therebetween, a bolster arranged between said ends of said bolster on one side thereof to one of said torque rods with one arm secured to said rod adjacent each end thereof for pivotal movement about an axis extending substantially transversely of said rod, said connecting means for at least one of said arms adjacent each end of said bolster being constructed to provide for relative movement between said bolster and said arm, and means for connecting the other ends of said arms extending from opposite ends of said bolster on the other side thereof to the other one ofsaidtorquerodswithonearmsecuredtosaid other torque rod adjacent each end thereof for pivotal movement about an axis extending substantially transversely of said other rod.
