Description

C. A. HARING. I Hosting and Dumping Apparatus.
No. 228,754. Patented June 15, i880.
"orig NITED STATES PATENT CORNELIUS A. HARING, OF PEORIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO MILTON HICKS, SR., AND MILTON W. HICKS, OF STREATOR, ILL.
HOISTING AND DUMPING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,754, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed February 7, 1880.
To all whom it may concern,
Be it known that l, CORNELIUS A. HARING, ot' the city of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Hoisting and Dumping; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which said drawings like letters indicate like parts in the several tigures.
Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section, on line a a of Fig. 3, of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on line b b of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan view,
certain parts being removed. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of a wagon-box and clutch-frame.
The Aobject of this invention is to produce a portable and simple apparatus for hoisting zo and dumping, which maybe easily and speedily operated, such an apparatus being verydesirable among farmers and dealers in grain and other articles, as well as shippers of produce.
My improved apparatus is more especially adapted to elevating the bodies or boxes of loaded wagons and discharging the contents therefrom, and the device is herein described as applied to such purpose, much manual labor being saved by its use in transferring the 3o contents of wagons to cars or cribs for transportation.
The frame of the apparatus has the shoes or runners A, on which it may be moved to the required position, and, if desired, sills provided 3 5 with wheels or rollers may be used in place of runners. B indicates the four corner-posts, rising from the runners to a convenient height and being properlybraced 5 C and C', the horizontal side and end beams connecting the posts 4o B, as shown; I) and D', the upper side and end beams, and E the canopy-beams at the top, converging to the center, at which point the hoisting-tackle is suspended within the frame. The side beams, C, also severally serve as rests 4 5 for the two ends of the wagon-box when it has been raised and turned to a transverse position for the purpose of dumping.
The hoisting-tackle consists of an upper stationary double pulley, F, a lower pulley, F',
5o and a cord, g, which is attached to the block ot' the lower pulley, said block being provided with a hook, m, for connection with the radiating' rods or chains G and G'.
For clasping the box L ot the wagon, an oblong clutch-frame is provided having the longitudinal pieces H and cross-pieces l, said traine being provided with the vertically-adjustable straps I, depending from the corners, each having a stirrup or swinging-loop, c, to hold the ends ofthe cross-bars K, which support the box 6o L. The parts H, near their ends, have slots to admit the ends of the pendent straps or rods I, the latter being usually secured by means ot` pins passing through holes, as shown.
The two rods G are adjustably secured to the clutch-frame by means of hooks p and staples d', the latterbeing fixed to the parts H near the end of the clutch-frame, which is over the rear or dumping end of the wagon-box, and the two rods G' are permanently secured 7o to the parts H near the forward end ot' the clutch-frame by means ot' the sta-ples d. The four rods G and G' radiate, as shown, from a loop or ring adjustable on the tackle-hook m. The cord g, attached to the block ot pulley F', 75 as above stated, passes upward and about the upper pulley, F, thence downward around the lower pulley, thence upward and over the upper pulley to a pulley, w, located at an upper corner of the main frame of the apparatus, 8o thence down and about another pulley, k, located near the base of the frame, to the draftanimals used to draw the cord, and thus effect the hoisting of the loaded wagon-box.
In operation the loaded wagon is driven within the main frame of the apparatus, the pulley F' is lowered with the attached rods G and G', to which the clutclrframe is suspended, as seen in Fig. l, the bars K are placed under the wagon-box With'their ends passing through 9o the stirrups c of straps I, the latter being properly secured to the parts H, as above stated, and the draft-animals are attached to the cord g, and driven to draw the cord and elevate the wagon -boX a little higher than the lateral beams C. The box L is now swung or turned to be at right angles with the beams C, and lowered a little so that its ends rest on the parts C, the rear end being toward the car or other receptacle which is to receive the conroo tents. The rods G are then nnhooked from the clutch-frame, so that the box L, by hoisting, is brought to an inclined position, its rear end bein released from rods G and resting' on a beam, C, the effect being to dump the'load, and the contents of the box L are usually discharged into a spout or conductor leading to the Warehouse or other receptacle. The box L is then lowered and replaced, and the apparatus may be moved forward to another receiving-point.
I claim- 1. A portable apparatus for hoisting and dumping, having a frame with runners at its base and provided with the lateral beams C as rests, snbstantialltx7 as and for the purposes described.
2. In a hoisting and dumping apparatus, the clutch-frame having the adjustable straps or rods I, with loops e, to hold bars K, and the radial rods G and G', coupled to a loop or ring and secured to said frame7 substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the hoisting-tackle F F g, the radial rods G and G, connecting;` with the clutch-frame, the rods G being` detachably secured to said frame, substantially as herein set forth.
4. The frame havin g; the runners A, posts B, lateral beams G, and beams` E, and provided with pulleys LU and 7c, in combination With the tackle I" F' g, and rods G and Gf, connecting with the clutch-frame havin g the straps I, with loops e and bars K, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing hoisting` and dumping apparatus I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of January, A. D. 1880.
