This invention relates to an insulating, waterproof and cushioning shoe, and has for an object to provide a shoe, conventional in appearance, yet that is waterproof, soft, flexible and warm, and not much greater in weight than any conventional shoe.
A further object of this invention is to provide a shoe having an interlining that is waterproof, soft, flexible and warm, extending entirely throughout the shoe but of substantially greater thickness throughout the heel and sole area than it is throughout the upper and back area, thereby providing a substantial cushioning effect to the foot of the wearer.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a shoe having an interlining of expanded cellular rubber, joined into an integral section extending through the upper, back, sole and heel areas.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the drawing, in which,

There is shown at III the shoe of this invention consisting of an interlining ll of a soft, waterproof, flexible andheat insulating material, such as expanded cellular rubber, this interlining ll being of a sufliciently substantial thickness so as to provide a comfortable cushioning effect to the wearer. This interlining II in its thickness extends throughout the heel area l2, across an arch area l3, and throughout the sole area It, thus providing a complete or whole sole. Joined to the interlining II by a vulcanizing strip II is an upper interlining I6 likewise of expanded cellular rubber, but of considerably less thickness, this interlining [8 being cut and shaped to provide an upper II as well as a heel back It.
Secured within the upper l6 and sole interlining II is an inner lining 20 of cloth or suitable material, while on the outside there is provided a conventional leather covering 2|, formed thereabout and extending underneath the sole interlining II, as at 22. A leather or rubber sole 23 is then secured along the bottom of this cover 22 beneath the sole interlining II and the usual heel 24 of leather or rubber is then secured in position.
As will be observed, the shoe thus provided by this invention provides an expanded cellular rubber covering extending entirely about the foot, yet of substantially greater thickness beneath the foot, to provide a comfortable cushion therefor within the shoe.
Other modifications and changes in the number and arrangement of the parts may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the nature of the invention, within the scope of what is hereinafter claimed.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and/or used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
Having thus set forth. and disclosed the nature of this invention, what is claimed is:
In combination with a shoe of conventional appearance having a leather upper and a conventional sole, an interlining of soft, waterproof, flexible insulating material extending throughout the sole and upper portions thereof, said material being of substantially greater thickness in the soleportion than in the upper portion, providing a substantial cushion therein, said material being of expanded cellular rubber, and a vulcanizing strip securing the thinner upper portion to the thicker sole portion in an integral unit.
