Description

, J. SANDLES.
Washing-Machine.
No. 228,685. Patented June 8,1880.
WITNESSES INVENTOR I '5? BY f d ATTORNEYS.
NPETF-RS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHXNGTON. D c.
UNITED STATES SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,685, dated WASHING- JOHN SANDLES, OF HINSDALE, ILLINOIS.
MACHINE.
June 8, 1880.
Application filed November 20, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SANDLES, of Hinsdale, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Washer, of which the following is a specification.
Figure '1 is a side elevation of the device, partly in section. Fig. 2 is aplan of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the under side of the plunger and attached cups.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to that class of devices in which clothes are cleansed by the ac tion ot'cupplungers.
The invention consists of acircular plunger made to nearly fit the tub, and provided on its under side with several circular cups, that are so fastened to it that they can revolve in a horizontal plane.
In the drawings, A represents a standard, and B an adjustable jaw secured to the said standardA with links G. The standard A and "aw B are set on the edge of the'tub D, (indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1,) and firmly held thereto by the thumb-screw E.
F is a lever having a slot, a, in one end, and it is secured to the standard A by a bolt or screw, b, that passes through the said slot a, the length of the said slot to determining the adjustability of the said lever F on the bolt or screw 1).
The upper end of the plunger-rod G is connected with the'lever F at any convenient point by the pin 0, that passes through the said lever F and through the plates H, between which the said rod G is fastened, as shown. The lower end of this rod G is centrally fastened to the cross-bar O of the plunger I, while the brace-rods K K, that extend from the cross-bar O of the plunger I to either side of the rod G, hold the said plunger I in position.
To the under side of the plunger I several smooth-rimmed cups, L L, are so fixed by bolts or pins d d that they (the cups L L) can revolve in a horizontal plane, each on its bolt or pin d, independently of the others.
The plunger 1 is designed to be of nearly the diameter of the tub to which itmay be attached, so that a minimum amount of water sh all splash or flow over the edges of the plunger when the said plunger I is in operation.
Each cup L is formed without a seam, of tin or other metal, to insure durability and in order that it may be rendered air-tight when in the water of the tub, so that it may the better force the suds through the clothes. The pin (1 may be provided with a packing-ring between its head and the cup.
The deviceis operated by moving the lever F up and down.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a clothes-washer constructed as herein described, and consisting of the circular plunger I, provided with a series of seamless revolving cups, L L, rod G, slotted lever F, and standard and jaw A B, as herein shown.
JOHN SANDLES.
