JOHN H. ROSE, OF NORWALK, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-.HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO EDWARD- K. LOCKWOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
TOY PISTOL.
SPECIFICATION forming" part 'Uf Letters PtentNa 228,682,.da.ted June 8, 1880.
Application filed April 3, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ROSE, of Nortlie following is a specification.
My invention consists in a toy pistol the stock of Which is constructed with a trans` verse circular opening or cavityextending entirely through the stock and opening upon both sides thereof, and adapted to embrace a removable cylindrical magazine within it. Y
It also consists in the combination, with such a stock having in it a slot or opening from said opening or cavity, of a removable magazine inserted in said cavity, constructed 'with heads, which constitute the ends of the openingy or cavity, and furnished withaslot in its periphery opposite the slot in the stock.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 represents a partially seetionalside View ot' a pistol embodying my invention. Fig. 2 rep resents a side View ot' such pistol having the magazine removed, and Fig. 3 represents a perspective view ofthe magazine detached.
Similar letters of reference designate correspondin g parts in all the figures.`
A designates, the stock ofthe pistol, which, as is usual in toy pistols, is cast in one piece' otl metal with the barrel. B designates the hammer, which is actuated by a spring, C, and pivoted at a; and D designates the trigger,
.which is pivoted at b, and the end of which is adapted to engage with the notch c in the hammer to hold the latter cocked. The coustruction and arrangement of these parts does not differ from the toy pistols now in use.
l For the purpose of actuating the trigger to hold the hammer cockedI employ a spiral spring, d, one end of which is held in place by 4a teat or projection, e, on the trigger D, and the other vend ot' whieh'bears against a luggf,V projecting from the side of the stock, thus providing'a novel' means of fixing the triggerspring in place.
E designates the detachable magazine, composedv ot' sheet metal or other material, and adapted to Vfit within a cavity or opening, F, in Ihe stock of the pistol. This opening extends entirely through the stock, opening upon both-sides thereof, and when the magazine is inserted in place the ends thereof constitute theends of the opening or cavity F. This cavity or opening fits snugly around the de- (No model.)
tachable magazines, so that the latter are held securely in place by friction. v
The detachablemagazine should have in its periphery a slot or opening, i, and in inserting the magazine in the cavity F care should be taken that the slot or opening 'i is coinci- 6o dent with the opening g, so that the fulminate strip or ribbon may be drawn freely through both openings. v
The magazine, as here represented, is composed of two parts, j j, similar in shape, except that one 4is, slightly larger in diameter than the other, so as to slip over it.
The detachable magazine is ot' great importance, as the fulminate strips or ribbons may 'be sold already coiled in them, and all that 7o is necessary to 'render the pistoliit for use or load it is to slip the empty magazine out of cavityor opening F and replace it with a full magazine.
It is obvious that inasmuch as the cavity or 7 5- opening receiving the magazine is open at both sides or ends, the said magazine, when empty, can be pushed out at one side by a pressure applied upon it at the other side or end.
I am aware that toy pistols have been constructed with a magazine for fulininate-tape, made in one piece with the stock and opening at one side only; and I do not therefore claim i this as my invention.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toy pistol the stock ot' which is constructed with a transverse opening or cavity,
F, extending entirely through the stock and 9`o opening on both sides thereof, and adapted to embrace and hold a removable cylindrical magazine Within it, substantially as specitied.
2. The combination,`with a toy pistol the stock of which is constructed with an opening 9 5 or cavity', F, extending entirely through-the stock and opening upon both sides thereot'and a slot, g, leading from said opening or cavity, of the removable magazine E, closed at each end, and the ends of which constitute the zoo ends of the opening or cavity F, embraced and held in said opening or cavity, and having a slot, fi, opposite the slot g, all substantially as specified.
JOHN H. ROSE.
