Description

I No Model.) I
' W. R; MILLER.
Last.
No. 228,664. Patented June 8,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. MILLER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,664, dated June 8, 1880. Application filed April 27, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. MILLER, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a specification and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to- 'of May, 1880.
The rubber shoe above referred to is one in which the upper has a certain fullness which is taken up by crimping the said upper longitudinally of the shoe, beginning at the edge of the opening for the foot and extending toward the toe, the object of this construction being to give an expansibility to the shoe over and above that dependent upon the extensibility of the material from which the said shoe is made.
To form the longitudinal crimps in the shoeupper I provide the last with ribs or corrugations of a size corresponding with the crimps to be formed in the shoe-upper.
In order to fully understand the nature of the present invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the imiproved last or the part thereof which, in the manufacture of the rubber shoe, is covered by the rubber. Fig. 2 is a section of the last, taken on the dotted line at y. Fig. 3 is acrosssection of a last, showing ribs of a different shape from those illustrated in the preceding figures.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the views.
In the said drawings, A is the body of the last, and a a are the ribs which form the crimps or grooves in the rubber-shoe upper when the same is laid upon the last in a plastic condition.
To effect the ventilating feature of the said rubber shoe the corrugations should extend to the upper edge of the shoe, or to the opening for the foot. Consequently I commence the ribs (6 on the last at that point and extend them to a proper distance toward the sole.
I claim as my invention A last having ribs orcorrugations on its surface, extending from its upper portion in the direction of the toe, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
WM. R. MILLER.
