C. E. NEWELL GORE MOLD FOR US E VKITH CONCRETE FORMS Filed July 25," 1940 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 In ventor y Athnicy Patented June 16, 1942 omren stares PATENT OFFICE ilORE MOLD FOR USE WITH CONCRETE FORMS 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in holders for attaching sleeves, or thimbles, such as are used in construction work to concrete forms, to shape holes in floors, ceilings, or walls, prior to and for use in installing water, steam, oil, gas, electrical pipe and the like in buildings.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive holder for such sleeves or thimbles, which may be quickly attached to and detached from Wood, concrete, metal and in fact all types of forms'so as to constitute an efficient, practical means for temporarily securing the thimbles, or sleeves, thereto, and through the medium of which shipping, bending, punching and nailing of such sleeves, or thimbles, as commonly resorted to in attaching the same, may be obviated and the placing of the thimbles, or sleeves, expedited and made easy.
Other and subordinate objects, together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in vertical section illustrating the manner in which a floor on a form is molded by the thimble or sleeve with which the invention is concerned,
Figure 2 is a similar View with the form removed,
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 4,
Figure 4 is a View in vertical section of the holder with the sleeve or thimble attached thereto, and the preferred form of attaching means for the holder,
Figure 5 is a similar view illustrating a modified form of attaching means, and
Figure 6 is another similar view illustrating still another modified form of attaching means for the holder.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the holder of my invention comprises a cylindrical, cup-like member I of cast iron, or suitable drawn metal, having a fiat bottom 2 provided with a central, circular raised Portion 3, and an inwardly converging rim 4, the member being of the proper outside diameter to fit snugly into the usual cylindrical thimble or sleeve 5, and of proper depth to extend into the lower end of the latter for a distance sumcient to hold the sleeve or thimble firmly in upright position. The bottom 2, around the portion 3 is provided with a plurality of nail holes 6 therein, and the portion 3 is provided with a central bolt hole "I.
The bottom 2 of the holder l is attached flat to the form, represented at 8, preferably by means of nails 9 driven at an angle into the form, it being understood that this means of attachment is utilized when the form is of suitable material for receiving nails or the like. As an optional means of attachment, a screw bolt I0 may be inserted through the hole I and turned into the form 8, as shown in Figur 5, As a further optional means of attaching the holder l to a form not susceptible to penetration by nails or screws, a bore ll may be provided in the form 8 and a toggle bolt [2 of the usual form may be inserted through the hole I in the bottom 2 and through said bore with the toggle nut l3 clamped against the form 8.
With the thimble or sleeve 5 positioned on the holder in the manner already indicated, the concrete floor I4 may be poured around the same to form the usual cylindrical hole [5 in a manner which will be readilyunderstood and the thimble or sleeve 5 removed from the form after the concrete is set. The holder is automatically removed with the form and may be salvaged for future use.
As an optional procedure the thimble or sleeve 5 may be left in the concrete and a hole knocked in the top thereof for the passage of pipe therethrough. Also a galvanized tubular sleeve, not shown, may be utilized in lieu of thimble or sleeve 5.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention is susceptible of modification in other respects than as described, and right is herein reserved to such other modifications as fall within the scope of the protection prayed.
What I claim is:
1. A holder for attachment to a construction form to support a thimble or sleeve comprising a cylindrical cup-like member of metal having a fiat bottom provided with a thin raised center portion of resilient thin character, said center portion having an aperture therein, and a toggle bolt in said aperture for securing said bottom to a form provided with a bolt receiving bore.
2. In combination, a cylindrical open bottom thimble for mounting on a construction form to shape a hole in a poured floor or the like, and means to mount said thimble on said form comprising a cup-like member of metal fitting snugly in the bottom of said thimble and having an inturned rim facilitating fitting of the same into said thimble, and means to detachably secure the bottom of said member to said form, the bottom of the member having a raised center.
CHARLES E. NEWELL.
