This invention relates to curtain rods, and more particularly to a curtain. rod package .including a rod or rods and a label combined therewith.

An important object of the invention is the provision of a curtain rod package including a rod or rods and a label carried thereon in such fashion that the nails employed in fastening the curtain rod in position are held in the label and confined within a protected space within the rod, thereby insuring the inclusion of the nails in the curtain rod package and reducing the cost of the package by eliminating the cost of material andY the eXtra labor involved in separately packaging the nails and inserting the nail container into the curtain rod package.

A further object is the provision of a curtain rod package wherein a plurality of rods making up a complete curtain rod unit of the double rod type are secured together and the nails packaged therewith by means of the label which binds the rods together and holds the nails to form a unitary package.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel label construction for curtain rods and the like.

Other objects will appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a conventional collapsible curtain rod embodying my invention;

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the back side of a curtain rod and label embodying the invention;

Fig. 3 is a view of the inside surface of the label prior to its application to the rod;

Fig. 4 is a section through a curtain rod adjacent the end of the label showing the manner in which the label is applied to the rod;

Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2;

Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a curtain rod package embodying two rods held together as a unit and. enclosing the necessary nails, and

Fig. 7 is a sec-tion on the line 'I--l of Fig. 6.

It will be seen from Figure 1 that one embodiment of the invention contemplates a conventional curtain rod of the collapsible type having sections designated generally by the numerals 6 and 'I formed of sheet metal providing a solid front face 8 and inturned edges 9 and II spaced as shown at I2 to provide a tube having an interior space I3. The section S is somewhat larger than the section 'I so that the section l' may slide within the chamber I3 of the section E. The sections have inturned ends I4 and I5 provided with suitable openings I6 and (Cl. 20G-47) adapted to engage brackets or other fastening means for securing the rod in its operative position above the window, door, or other structure over which the curtains are to hang.

The invention contemplates a label designated generally by the numeral I3 comprising a sheet of paper, cloth, or the like, upon which the usual trade-marks or trade names, name of the manufacturer, instructions and the like, are inscribed. TheseY inscriptions willl be provided on the outside of the label, that is,l the side appearing in Figs. 1 and 2. In Fig. 3 the opposite side of the label is shown, which in this particular instance is covered with the usual adhesive gum. In this instance, one Vedge of the label is turned inward upon itself as shown at I9, and the inner edge 2| thereof is moistened so that this edge adheres against the back side of the label. Likewise, the

22 and 23 are moistened toadhere so as to provide an envelope as indicated at 24 for the reception of nails 25 of the type employed for securing the rod in position. In making up the label, these nails are laid against the back side of the label and the portion I5 is folded up over the nails and sealed in the areas indicated by the numerals 2| and 23, thus producing a structure such as shown in Fig. 3. This label is applied to the curtain rod in the manner shown in Figs. 4 and 5. It will be seen that because of the presence of the nails 25 in one edge ofthe label, this portion is of substantial thickness. This thickened portion is inserted in the space I2 between the edges 9 and II in the manner shown in Fig. 4, and the remainder of the label is wrapped around the rod as shown in this figure. With the envelope portion 24 pressed into the chamber I3 of the rod, the opposed edge 26 of the label is drawn around the rod until the label seats snugly thereagainst, whereupon the edge portion 26 is moistened and pressed against the outer surface of the label in the area designated at 21 in Fig. 5, thereby sealing the label around the rod. This leaves the outer inscribed surface of the label exposed to View in the required fashion and at the same time connes the envelope portion of the label within the chamber I3. It will be seen that an intermediate portion 28 of the label extends across the opening l2, thereby eiectively concealing the envelope portion 24 and at the sarre time protecting this portion from mechanical damage, preventing this portion of the label from emerging,

from the protecting connes of the chamber I3. In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown the manner in which the invention is applied to a curtain rod unit of the double rod type. As is well known in the art, certain types of rod units comprise a pair of rods which are fastened at the top of the Window to extend thereacross, one within the other. According to my invention these rods are secured together to form a unitary package by placing the rods one Within the other as shown in Fig. 6, wherein the numerals 3| and 32 `designate the tWo rods of the unit, each rod being identical in structure with that of Figure 1, the rods being nested one Within the other. A label 33, identical with the label I3 except for the greater length thereof, is wrapped around the central portion of the two rods and s-ecured as heretofore described with the nails 25 carried inthe envelope 24. As Will be apparent from Fig, 7, the envelope and nails are received in the space I3 of the rod 3| in the same manner as in the form shown in Fig. 5, and a similar result is obtained.

It will be seen that because of this construction a substantially negligible quantity of extra material is required for packaging the nails, and no extra labor is involved in enclosing the nailed package in the curtain rod because the presence of the envelope 24 in no wise increases the normal labor required for applying the label. Furthermore, since the label is bound around the rod, there is no likelihood of the nails being accidentally displaced from the rod during handling. Furthermorathe package may include a single rod or a plurality of rods seated together in nesting relation and secured by the label.

I have shown a speciic embodiment of the invention by Way of illustration, but I am aware that numerous changes may be made therein within the spirit of the invention, and I do not wish to be limited except as required by the prior art and the scope of the appended claims, in which I claim:

1. The combination in a curtain rod package of a curtain rod having a central chamber and a longitudinal slot communicating therewith, a label comprising a sheet of flexible material, one side thereof bearing inscriptions and the opposite side being at least in part covered With adhesive, said sheet having one edge portion of relatively small area bent back upon itself and sealed to the main body of the sheet at the free edges of said edge portion to form an envelope, and rod fastening means confined in said envelope, said envelope being seated in said central chamber and said label extending through said slot and around said rod, the edge thereof opposite said envelope being sealed to an intermediate portion of said label to conne the envelope within the chamber and to span said slot.

2. The combination in a curtain rod package of a curtain rod comprising a pair of rod members seated together in nesting relation, at least one of said members having a central chamber and a longitudinal slot on an exposed side thereof, a label comprising a sheet of flexible material having one edge portion of relatively small area bent back upon itself and sealed at the free edges thereof to form an envelope, and rod fastening means confined in said envelope, said label being Wrapped around said rod means and sealed to itself to secure said members together with said envelope seated in said central chambers.
