Description

J. P. DoMAN 2,284,951

HINGE Filed Mach 2e, 1940l l v j JNVENTOR. (I0/irl Pelzer Daman ArToR/vey Patented June 2, 1942 .rant WEE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to hinges and more especially to hinges for use on doors of various types.
This application is for improvements of my former applications, Serial No. 286,382, filed July 25, 1939, and Serial No. 306.663, led November 29, 1939.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple,Y practical and inexpensive hinge construction.
Another object is to provide a hinge for doors and the like whereby the door may be swung through the full arc of 18) degrees.
A further object is to provide a hinge as described which is completely concealed in the closed position.
An additional object is to provide a hinge having a retractable hinge pin which can not be removed from the hinge structure.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top view of a hinge embodying my invention as seen in position in a door jamb;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the door in partially opened position; f
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing opened;
Fig. 4 is an elevation view of a hinge as seen in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective Viewv of the hinge itself.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, I show a door jamb I0 and a door II each suitably recessed to receive a hinge part. The hinge comprising my invention consists of bracket members I2 and I3 and a link I4, the brackets being provided with screw holes I5 for securing screws i5. Bracket member I3 has a U-shaped portion Il on which is mounted a block I8 which is provided with a bore for a retractable hinge pin I9, the upper and lower parts of, U portion Il being also bored to receive pin I9.
Pin I9 has an eyelet head 2l), and member I3 is slotted as at 2l to permit the entrance of the end of a pointed tool for raising pin I9 for retracting the same from link I4. An abutment 22 is provided at the upper end of slot 2l to prevent removal of pin I9 from block I8.
An adjustable limiting screw 23 is provided in the door fully U portion Il and a fixed limitingY pin 2d may also I provide for a bearing for pin I9 and an end portion 26 through which extend pins 2l and 28. Bracket member I2 has a `U-shaped portion 29, the upper and lower portions of which are each provided with a right angle slot 3D.
The ends of pin 2l extend nearly through slot 36, whereas pin 28 may comprise a bolt having a head 3| and an adjustable nut 32 which provides shoulders which bear against the outer portion of U member 29 such that the nutv32 may be adjusted and a drag or brake effect be provided for the adjacent end of link I4.
In this manner, when the door is opened as from the position of Fig. 1 to that of Fig. 2, the
, screw 23 and thereafter the pivoting will be by pins 27 and 28 in slot 39.
I have found that the arrangement of pins 21 and 28 and slot 3i) provide the most satisfactory type of hinge movement for concealed hinges where the clearance of swing of the door II and jamb I0 are involved and in practice I may provide both the door and the jamb with bracket members of either of the types I2 or I3.
Having described my invention, what I claim '1. A hinge as described, comprising a pair of bracket members each having a U-shaped portion, a substantially U-shaped link pivotally secured at its end portions to said U-shaped portions of said brackets, the opposite sides of one of said bracket U portions each having a V-shaped slot, said link having an end portion provided with a pair of bearing pins slidable in said slots.
2. A hinge as described, comprising a pair of bracket members each having a U-shaped portion, a substantially U-shaped link pivotally secured at its end portions to said U-shaped portions of said brackets, the opposite sides Aof one of said bracket U portions each having a V-shaped slot, said link having an end portion providedwith a pair of bearing pins slidably positioned in said slots, and one of said pins having adjustable means to effect a drag engagement with said bracket U portion.
