AMOS M. TRUAX, OF OXFORD, OHIO.
HORSESHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,492, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed December 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS M. TRUAX, of OX- ford, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective View of the shoe; Fig. 2, an end view, looking from the heel; Fig. 3, a crossseetion through line 00 0c of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 4, a bottom view, and Fig. 5 a section through line y y of Fig. 4.
My invention relates to horseshoes, and has for its object the formation of a shoe that will expand the foot, keep the same moist, and lessen the jar on the horses shoulders in his movements and to the accomplishment thereof it consists in the substantial construction hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA indicates the quarters of the shoe; B, the bevel on the edge of the inner face, which bevel, in this instance, is made narrower than in the ordinary shoe; 0, the toe-calk; D, the heels, and E, a plate applied to the top and rear part of the shoe, so as to form a part thereof and in the construction of which plate my invention consists. This plate is of metal, and is formed with a curved and elevated rear portion, a, a depressed front portion, 1), and sloping heels 0. The depressed front bis represented as being sunk at the edge below the plane of the shoe, while the portions 0, which overlie and are attached to the heels of the shoe, incline or slope outward,'the slope being gradual from or near the front edge of the plate back to the extremities of the heels, at which points'the plate suddenly rises into the rounded elevation seen at a, all as elearlyindicated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the accompanying drawings. This plate can be struck up, stamped, molded, beaten, or otherwise made into the shape described, and is welded or otherwise joined to the top face of the rear portion of the shoe.
When the shoe is applied to the foot the frog rests on the portion 1) of the plate, while the curved portion a fits into the space back of the frog, affording a support for the 'foot at that point, and the heel of the foot rests on the portions of the plate overlying the heels of the shoe.
By supporting the frog and other parts of the foot at the several points, as just indicated, the depressed portion of the plate is caused to give to the frog of the foot that same presshorse, and to prevent the same in the feet of 5 a horse not so, and to prevent and also cure quarter and toe cracks and corns, and to lessen the jar on the shoulder.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- A horseshoe provided with a metallic plate, E, formed, as described, with elevated rear a and heels 0 and depressed front I), for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, AMOS M. TRUAX.
