KARL E. TIMMERMANN, OF SENFTENBERG, PRUSSIA.
BURGLAR-ALARIVI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,490, dated June 8,11880.
Application led March 520, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, KARL EMIL TIMMER- MANN, of Senftenberg, Kingdom of Prussia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object I have in view is to produce a torpedo for attachment to doors or windows, so that when the same are opened the torpedo will be released, and falling will strike the iioor and explode, which torpedo will be simple aud cheap in construction, can be loaded to produce a loud explosion, and at the same time will not set fire to the curtains or carpet iu the room where it is placed.
My invention consists iu the peculiar construction of the torpedo, as fully hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a central section of the torpedo; Fig. 2, a sectional view of a modified form ot' the same; Fig. 3, au elevation of a window, with my torpedo attached thereto, aud Fig. 4 a sectional perspective View, showing the method of attaching the torpedo.
Like letters denote corresponding parts in all of the iigures.
A is a weight of metal, and preferably of cylindrical form. It has an eye or hole, a, in its upper end, to which is connected the cord Z) for suspending the torpedo. The lower end of the weight is bored out to form a cylindrical chamber, at the upper end of which a transverse hole, c, is bored through the walls ofthe saine.
A round head, B, has a shank, B', which fits loosely in said chamber, and is held therein by screws d, which enter a groove, c, in the shank. This annular groove e is wide enough to permit a vertical play of the head B and its shank.
A hole is bored up through the center of the head and shank B B', and in this hole is turned a screw, f, having au extension, j", with a point resem bling that of a screw-driver. A chamber to receive the explosive compound is formed around the extension f' of the screw "l The point of the extension j" rises a sli'ort distance above the shank B', and receives the percussion-cap, as shown.
The screws d carry guards g, which are situated opposite the holes c, and prevent the gases of the explosion from setting re to the carpet or curtains of the room.
It will be seen that if the torpedo is allowed to drop when loaded the head B will strike the door and the powder will be eX- ploded.
In the modification, Fig. 2, the shank B' has an oval hole, h, made through it trans- Versely, and is held by a single screw, d, passing through such hole. The hole c eX- tends through one side only ofthe chamberin the lower end of the weight, and there is but one guard, g.
The solid shank B' has a wedge-shaped striking-point rising from it, and the percussion-cap, iilled with fulminating-powder or other strong explosive, is held in a small hole in the weight directly above the shank B'.
To apply the torpedo to a window it may be hung on a small lever, C, resting by a point on the lower sash and held by an eye, z', on the upper sash, so that when either sash is moved the lever will be released and the torpedo allowed to fall.
The torpedo can be hung the right distance from the iioor or the window-seat, so thatit will do no damage when it strikes.
The torpedo can be attached to a door by any simple means, so that it will fall when the door is opened.
The torpedo can also be used on railroadtrains to sound an alar1n,and may be counected with the signal-cord.
To load the torpedo the head and shank B B' have to be removed from the weight.
What I claim as my invention isl. In a burglar-alarm, the falling torpedo, having vent-holes c and guards g, substantially as described and shown.
2. In a burglar-alarm,the torpedo described, consisting of weight A, bored out at its lower end, the head and shank B B', screws d, guards g, vent-holes c, screw f, and extension j", constructed and arranged substantially as set forth and shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subseribin g witnesses.
G. DITTMAn, FRANK G. ZIMMERMAN.
