Application May 15,1939, Serial No. 273,731
1 Claim.
This invention-pertains generally to domestic cooking utensils, and more particularly to a cooker designed for either electric or gas ranges, wherein the utensil is inserted through an opening in the top plate of the range to present a flush surface, and allow a hinged cover to be closed over the utensil.
The invention has primarily for its object to improve cookers of the foregoing type, particularly with respect to their handle structures, by the provision of a hinged connection that allows the handles to lie substantially in the same horizontal plane as the flange or top edge of the cooker, the handles being pivotal to a vertical position for removal and portability of the cooker.
Incidental to the foregoing, a more specific object of the invention resides in the provision of brackets secured to the underside of the cooker flange and having lugs projecting through ears formed on the ends, of the handles, the flange being slotted for reception of the ears.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel method, construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
- In the accompanying drawing is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a cooker constructed in accordance with one form of the present invention, with parts broken away and in section to more clearly illustrate structural details;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevation partially broken away and, in section, and
Figure 4 is a detail elevation of one of the handle brackets before attachment to the utensil.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral l designates the shell of a cooking receptacle, which in the present instance is circular in form, alt hough the shape may be varied without departing from the principles of the invention. At its upper edge, the shell I is provided with a horizontal flange 2 terminating at its outer edge in a depending skirt 3. The inner periphery of the flange 2 is provided with an annular seat 4 for reception of the peripheral bead 5 formed on a flat cover- 6.
As best shown in Figure 2, the cover 6 is provided with a central depression 1 for reception of the knob 8, whereby the same is positioned below the top face of the cover to avoid obstruction. If desired the cover may be provided with a gravity vent 9 of conventional structure for relieving pressure generated within the cooker.
Secured to the underside of the flange 2 upon opposite sides of the utensil, are brackets or straps It), provided at their opposite ends with lugs or pintles ll. As best shown in Figure 1, the flange 2 and depending skirt 3 is slotted at l2 for reception of ears 13 formed upon opposite In practice the straps ends of flat handles I 4. lil are slightly bowed before attaching, as best shown in Figure 4, and upon flattening the same to spot weld them to the flange, obviously, the pintles II will be protruded to project through openings I5 formed in the handle ears l3, thus serving to permanently and rigidly secure the handles to the utensil for pivotal movement, the horizontal and vertical position of the handles being determined by engagement of the ears with the ends of the slots [2.
From the foregoing explanation it will be apparent that an exceedingly simple, inexpensive and durable handle structure has been provided for utensils of the'general type described, which permit a receptacle of substantial depth to be positioned on the top of the stove, and yet maintain a substantially fiat surface, allowing other vessels to be placed on the stove or permitting a hinger cover to be closed down over the cooker.
I claim:
A cooking utensil comprising, a receptacle provided with a flat peripheral horizontal flange at its upper edge terminating in a'depending skirt, opposed pairs of spaced closed slots formed across the angle made by the juncture of the flange with the depending skirt, straps secured to the underside of said flange upon opposite sides of said receptacle between said depending skirt and the wall of said receptacle and adjacent said slots, pintles provided on the ends of said straps, relatively flat handles provided with
