NTED STATES PATENT Prion.
WILLIAM V. PERRY, OF BEAVER DAM, WISOON SIN.
BUMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,385, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed April 9, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM V. PERRY, of Beaver Dam, in the county of Dodge, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Coup lings and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon, makinga part of this specification.
My invention relates to car-couplings; and it consists in blocks arranged in the box or casing for the draw-bar spring, for the purpose of relieving the spring from being overworked from either direction from a pull or push of the engine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of a drawbar, spindle, spring, and block embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section ofthe spindle, spring, hunter-sticks, and blocks. Fig.3 is a perspective view of one of the blocks used.
A represents the car-floor timbers, to the under side of which is attached the housing or case B.
D is the draw-bar, provided with the spin- (lle or bolt a. On this bolt is placed the spiral spring I), with a follow-iron, 0, at each end thereof, and a pin or nut, g, fastened in or on the bolt back of the rear iron.
f f are the hunter-sticks, to which are at- (No model.)
tached stops to limit the movement of the follow-iron.
These parts are all constructed and arranged substantially in the same manner as in other car-couplings of this class.
0 0 represent movable blocks or spring-protectors, placed between the follow-irons 0 on both sides of the spring, and are shorter than the distance between said irons when the spring is extended. These blocks form stops,
or a limit beyond which the spring cannot be contracted when forced in either direction, and by this means the spring is relieved from being overworked from either direction from a pull or push of the engine. 7
Instead of the movable blocks I may use a short block at or near the center, and made fast to the banter-sticks, or held in any secure manner, and if the spring should be worked only in one direction a block may be fastened at back end, and answer the same purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a car-coupling having a spring or springs at the rear end of .the draw-bar, one or more moving blocks, which wholly or partially surround the spring, arranged to relieve the same from being overworked, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of April, 1880.
WM. VOORHEES PERRY. Witnesses:
J. H. VINCENT, R. E. LIBBY.
