WALTER E. WENZEL, 0F ALTOONA, WISCONSIN.
DRAW-BAR FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
Application filed March 18, 1914. Serial No. 825,638.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER E. WENZEL, a citizen of United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Fan Clair, State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draw-Bars for Railway-Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in draw bars for railway cars, and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that the shock incident to the coupling of the cars will be compensated for and the shock occasioned by the starting of the cars relieved.
With this and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a plan view of the device, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and, Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the device therein illustrated is designed for use in connection with hopper bottom cars, a pair of transoms 19 being provided for spanning the hopper. Passing through the transoms 19 are rods 20, which have connected thereto bars 21, coil springs being interposed between the transoms and bars, said springs being designated by the numeral 22. Fixed to the outer faces of the bars 21 are screw threaded rods 23 which are connected to the inner ends of the turn buckles 24, the other ends of which are in sliding engagement with the rods 25, which have their inner ends threaded and engaged by the nuts 26 which are operable in the same manner as the plates 6 of the preferred forin. The outer ends of'the rods 25 are connected to the plates 27, there being coil springs 28 encircling the rods 25 and interposed between the outer ends of the turn buckles and inner faces of the plates 27 The draw bars 29 are fixed between the plates 30 which have their inner ends connected to the plates 31, thus the plates 30 are held in spaced relation so that the bars 32 and 33 can move backwardly and forwardly in the space. Bolts 34 have their outer ends fixed to the bars 32, and slidably engage the bars 33 intermediate their ends, while their outer ends are engaged with the plates 27 said bolts being encircled by the coil springs 35 which have their outer terminals resting against the bars 32 and their inner terminals resting against the bars 33.
When the cars are pushed together the shock will be taken up by the compression of the springs 22 and 28. WVhen the cars are started so that they tend to pull apart the shock incident to the starting will be taken up by the springs 35.
What is claimed is In a device of the class described, the combination with a pair of connecting rods adapted to be secured to the bottom of a car, of bars connecting the adjacent ends of the bars, transoms for supporting the rods, springs encircling the rods and bearing against the bars and transoms, a turn buckle secured to each of said bars, bolts slidably mounted in said turn buckles, yokes connected to said bolts, said yokes having plates at the ends thereof, a spring encircling each bolt and bearing against one plate on the adjacent yoke and the end of the adjacent turn buckle, draw bars slidably mounted on said yokes and springs interposed between the plates on the other ends of the yokes and the inner ends of the yokes.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
WALTER E. WENZEL. WVitnesses:
FRED. ARNOLD, W. W. Downs.
