Description

H. HEMENWAY. Wire Stretchers.
No. 228,350. Patented Jun 1, 18 80.
JzzzW-M MPETERS, FHUTD-LITHOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON D O NI'IED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANEY HEMENWAY, OF RIDOTT, ASSIGNOR TO ALFRED R. GARVER, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
WIRE-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 228,350, dated June 1, 1880. Application filed February 24, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANEY HEMENWAY, of Itidott, in the county of Stephenson, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Fence-Wire Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in devices for stretching and tightening wire for wire fences and similar purposes, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing part of the chain; Fig. 2, a perspective view, showing the other end of the chain.
A is a metal bar, formed at one end with a hook, B, and having a side bar, A, attached to it, so as to constitute a frame, in which is mounted a roller, 0." This roller is provided with a series of radial equidistant teeth or cogs, a c, and a crank, E, for rotating it.
In the end of the frame formed by the bars A A are two pins, 1) b, forming a guide, in which the chain D works.
Immediately in front of the upper pin, 1), is pivoted a latch, d, to drop into the links of the chain and prevent any backward movement of the same.
The chain D, passing between the pins 1) I) over the cogged roller 0, hangs down under the frame, as shown, its inner end having a ring attached to it to prevent its being entirely withdrawn.
In the outer end of .the chain is pivoted an eccentric lever, G, to which a sliding clamp, H, is connected by pivots, as shown in Fig. 2.
On the forward part of the frame A A is pivoted a slotted plate orarm, I. In this is pivoted an eccentric lever, G, and to it a sliding clamp, H.
The hook B is to be applied to the fencepost in any convenient manner and the chain D extended. The wire to be stretched is then placed in the clamp H and the eccentric lever Gr turned to hold the same. The crank may now be turned to rotate the roller 0, when its cogs or teeth a will take hold in the links of the chain and pull the same with the wire, the strain of the wire keeping the clamp tightly closed and thus preventing the wire from slipping. As each link passes from between the pins 1) b the latch d drops down and prevents the chain from slipping.
When the wire has'been sufificiently stretched it-is placed in the clamp H and held by the eccentric G, so that the chain may be loosened and the wire fastened to the fence-post by any ordinary means.
What I claim is The combination of the frame A A with hook'B, toothed roller or spool, chain having clamping attachment, and the latch d, all constructed as described.
In testimony. that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th dayof December, 1879.
HANEY HEMENWAY.
