l.` HUTCHERSON l COMBINATIQN'WOVEN WIRE' sTRETcHER AND HoIsT Filed March 2o 1922 Patented duly 17, 1923,
IRA HUTCHERSON, OF KEOKUK, IOWA.
Application led March 20, 1922. SerialiNo. 545,111.
T all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, IRA l'lUTcI-innsoiv, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of leokuk, in the county of Lee and State of lowa, have invented a certain new and useful Combination Woven-W'ire Stretcher and Hoist, of which the following is a specification.
rIhe object of my invention is to provide a combination woven wire stretcher and hoist, the parts being of simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction.
More particularly my invention relates to a structure especially adapted to the stretching ot wire `fences or the like, the parts being` so arranged'that they may be easily assembled or disassembled, and can be operated in a minimum amount of time and eiliort.
Still another object is to provide such a structure wherein the parts may beused as a hoist or may be used as a fence stretcher interchangeably.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the obliects contemplatcd are attained, as hereinafter more Jfully set i'orth, `pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention showing it used as a Jfence stretcher.
Figure 2 shows my invention being used as a hoist.
Figure 3 is a central, sectional view taken on line 9)#3 of Figure 1.
Figure t is a perspective View of one oi. the brackets, forming a part of my invention; andv Figure is a central sectional view taken through one of the combined worm wheels and cable drums.
ln the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally a supporting rod which is provided with a bracket A at its upper end and a bracket B at its lower end.
The brackets A and B are each similar in construction and are clearly illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings.
The brackets A and B are each provided with an opening 11 designed to receive the supporting rod 10. i
A small opening 12 is provided in the brackets A and B so that a pin 13 may .extend therethrough. The pin 13 also extends through the supporting rod 1()A and thus sesurely holds the brackets in proper position on the supporting rod' 10. y
A clevis 14 is fixed to each of the pins 13, and a iiexible element 15 is secured to each of the clevises 14. The tree ends of the flexible elements or chains 15 are provided with hooks 16 which are designed to be receivedin any| of the links in the chain 15.
The flexible elements or chains 15 may be extended around a fixed post 17, as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The brackets A and B are each provided with an opening 18 for forming aA bearing member for the rod 19. The rod 19 is provided with a pair ot spaced worms 20.
The forward ends of the brackets A and B are bifurcated so as to form the fingers 21. The ends ofthe lingers 21. are provided with a pair of registering openings 22, through which may be extended the bolt or the like 23.
Rotatably mounted on the bolt 23 and between the lingers 21 of the brackets A and B is a combined worm wheel and cable drum 211. Each of the combined worm wheels and cable drums are designed to mesh with the worms on the rod 19.
The combined worm wheels and cable drums are formed of two similar halves, as clearly shown in Figure 5 of the drawings.
Secured to each of the cable drum portions 25 are the cables 26. The cables 26 have their forward ends xed to a clevis 27. Each of the clevises 27 may be secured to a bar 28. The bar 28, in turn, is secured to a woven wire fence 29 by means ot the bolts 30.
In order to rotate the worm wheels by operation of the rod 19, l employ a crank 31.
From the construction of the parts just described, it will be seen that rotation of the rod 19 in one direction, will cause the woven wire fence to be drawn `tightly so that it may be stapled to the ordinary tence post.
The Worm and Worm Wheel construction form a brake against movement, which might cause the Woven Wire fence to be released.
The rod 19, however, may be rotated in either direction for either releasing or Winding the 'cable 26 on 'the drums. Movement, however, of the drums for imparting rotation to the rod 19 Will not be had, due to the Worm and Worm Wheel construction.
In Figure 2 of the drawings, I have shown my invention as being used :tor hoisting purposes. In this form of use of my invention the flexible elements are secured 'to' a beam In place of the crank 31 on the rod 19, I employ a chain gear pulley 33 which is operated by the chain 34C.
'4 From the construction of the parts just described, rit Will be seen that movement ot thefchain will cause the chain gear pulley 33 to be rotated for operating the rod 19.
` f ItY vvill be seen that my invention is very! 'simple and that the parts may be easily assembled or disassembled and can be used interchangeably for various purposes.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement ot the various parts of my invention, Without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention and it is my intention to cover by my claim, any modied forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included Within their scope.
I claini as my invention:
In a device of the class described, a pair of brackets, each having a pair of openings, a supporting rod received in one of the openings of each bracket, pins extended through the brackets and through the rod for fixing the brackets thereon and supporting them in spaced relation, said brackets having` a pair of spacedL ears thereon, a second rod journalled in the other openings in said brackets, a crank on said second rod, a com bined worm Wheel and cable drum ournalled between said ears on each of said brackets,
Worms spaced from each other iixed to said second rod and arranged to mesh with the combined worin xpvheels and cable drums, said combined Worm Wheels and ci ble drums including a pair ot similar members having tubular cable receiving portions and flanges provided With teeth on their adjacent faces for forming the Worm Wheels.
Des Moines, Iowa, March 13, 1922.
IRA HUTGHERSON.
