(Cl. S12-186) 8 Claims.
tory index, a memo pad, pencil, calendar, and` other desired accessories are or may be mounted.
Further, it is an object to prowlde means whereby, when the topmost directory-carrying slide is pulled out to operative position, the raisable top section with its plate will automatically be brought to the operative position.
Further, it is an object to provide a telephone stand which may be built low and which has provisions when several (five, for New York City) directories are used, for holding the lowermost (andintermediate, if desired) directory-carrying slide in an elevated position for use adjacent the top of the stand.
Further, it is an object to provide means to partly eject the directory slide which cooperates mechanically with the raisable top section and to provide a latch to hold the said slide closed in, which latch may be released by .a push rod operable from the front of the stand,
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objectsV and ends of the invention, the invention still further resides in those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be irst fully described in the following detailed description, and then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichz' Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the stand with the top sections lid open and the telephone directory slides in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the stand with the top down and the directory slides in the closed position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the detail shown in Fig. 4.
Fig.. 6 is an enlarged detail vertical section, later specifically referred to.
Fig. 7' an enlarged detail: vertical section showing how the bottom slide may be held for view adjacentv the top of the stand.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention and are used for illustrative purposes only and not as limitations, it will be seen that the stand comprises a top I supported at a suitable level either by a skeleton frame or (as illustrated) by a closed frame composed of side walls 2, a front Wall 3, and a rear wall II.
5 designates a set of downwardly, rearwardly slides I and 8 are supported in the closed position. The front wall 3 of the cabinet has openings 6 through which the slides 8 are introduced and removed and which are, in part at least, closed by the fronts 9 of the slides. The slides have suitable handles or pulls IIJ on their fronts 9.
` The top slide 'I is provided withv a cleat II on its rear end and with at least one latch I9 (only one being shown in theY drawings) pivoted at 20 to the slide.. It is also provided with at least one arm I4 pivoted at I5' to the furcations I3 of an abutment I2, the arm I4 being held against the abutment I2, when free, by a suitable spring 28, and lying against the spring 28 and abutment I I when in the position shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. The arm I4 has a head I6 (preferably circular)l to lie inv a recess 2l in the wall 3 above the top opening 6, while the slide 'I rests on the front edge of the upper'partition 5 (see Fig. 3). -If desired a notch 24 may be 'provided in the slide 'I to t over or receive said front edge (see Fig. 4)
Springs I'I, of suitable kind, are secured to the Wall 4 and abut the inner end of the slide 1 when theY slide end is adjacent the springs and serve to give an initial impetus to the slide, when it is unlatched, so as partly to project the slide through the opening` 6.
The latchv I9 may be inY the form of a bell crank and` hook onto a fixed keeper I8 secured to the wall 4, a suitable spring 29 being arranged to press the latch I9 to its latching position. The latch is released by a rod 2l operated by a push-button' 22 at the front of the slide.
In order that' the lowermost slide (and the intermediate ones may be constructed likewise, ifv Y desired) may be removed and held inan elevated, easily readable position, it is provided with a hook 23 to enter a recess 2l, While the slide 8 lies with its notch 55 over the upper edge ofthefront 9- of the'top slide as shown in Fig. 7.
The first, secondz and third shelves 5 have notches` 2BL ton receive the` ends or the slides- 8,
While their slides are in their operative position.
In order to brace the slide 8, when in the position shown in Fig. '1, a pair of rod-like arms 30 having bent ends to underlie the slide 8 and rest in recesses 56 therein may be provided. These arms 30 lie in recesses 3| in the face of the wall 3 and are pivoted at 32. They may also have heels 33 to lie in recesses 34 against springs 35 which continuously tend to move the arms 3D to the normal or non-operative position (see Figs. 3 and 6). When slide 8 (Fig. '1) is lifted to remove it for replacement into the stand, arms 30 will swing back into the Wall 3. When it is desired to use the arms 30 las braces, they may be pulled out by ones ngers, nger-recesses 51 being provided in wall 3 for that purpose.
The top I of the stand has a lid-like section 31 to iit an opening 36, the lid 31 being hinged at 38 to swing up. A plate 39 is hinged at 40 to the lid 31 and has its lower end arranged to rest on a fixed guide 4I secured beneath the top I. Pivoted at 44 to the plate 39 is one end of a lever 42, fulcrurned on a stud 43. The long arm of the lever 42 may engage astop 54 when the lid 31 is fully opened (see Fig. 3). The long arm of the lever 42 projects into the path of the arm I4 when the lid 31 is open for a purpose presently to appear. A bracket 46 is fixed to the lid 31 and is connected to the slide 1 by a exible cable or chain 41 provided, if desired, with a resilient section 53 as a spring, for example.
The plate 39 may have mounted thereon a telephone directory 49 of particular-call numbers, a calendar 50 and memo pad 5I, for example, while the main directories 48 are suitably secured to their respective slides 1 and 8.
Operation The stand illustrated may have one or more directory-carrying slides (one for small cities and more for larger cities, the flve-slideform being for New York, Where five directories are used.
Assume now that the lid 31 is closed and the directory slides 1 and 8 are closed in. When it is desired to use the stand (on which the telephone instrument 52, Fig. 1, is set) the user pushes button 22 which releases latch I9, whereupon springs I1 partly eject the slide 1. The operator now pulls the slide 1 outwardly until arm I4 assumes the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4. As the slide 1 is pulled out, cable 41 pulls on bracket or arm 46 which raises lid 31 to the position shown in Fig. '1, thereby at the same time bringing plate 39 intoposition.
When the slide 1 is pushed ,inV again, arm I4 will engage the long arm of lever 42 androck the same counter-clockwise in Fig. 3 and thereby close the lid. y
As the slide is pushed in fully, latch I9 catches keeper I8 and holds slide 1 against the'force of the compressed springs I1. Y
The lid 31 may be raised separately by hand, if desired. If'lid 31 be in the raisedV position (Fig. 3) and it be then desired to pull out slide 1, arm I4 will yield and ride under lever 42, but on the return movement of the slide,.arm I4 will engage lever42 to reclose the lid 31.
T illuminate the plate 39 and directory slides 1, 8 when in use, a suitably located lamp 58 (tube light preferred) may be used, and by employing suitably located reflectors (not shown) the light may be reflected over the dial of the phone when lid 31 is up. As the lighting arrangementof any particular kind is not an essential feature of the invention, further illustration and description thereof is thought to be unnecessary to this application.
As before intimated, the drawings are illustrative only of the principles of the invention and the general arrangement and combination of parts, and I desire it understood that changes in the details of construction, design and arrangement of parts may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
