UMTED Sfrarns Arnivr rtree,
ELIAS CONOVER, OF TRUMANSBURG, NEW YORK.
INVALID-BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent -No. 228,318, dated June 1, 1880.
Application led April 13, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS CONOVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trumansburg, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Bedsteads, of which the followingI is a specication.
This invention relates to` certain improve ments in invalid-bedsteads, and it has for its object to provide a means for elevating the portion of the bottom of the bedstead which supports that part of the mattress upon which the head and upper portion of the body of the occupant rest without disturbing the occupant.
To this end the invention consists in the combination, with an ordinary bedstead, of a section occupying the place of the slats at the head of the same, which section ispivoted between the side rails of the bedstead, and a lever-frame provided with friction-rollers, upon which the edges of the pivoted section hear, the said frame having connected with it a series of belts, cords, or chains passing over pulleys attached to the head-board of the bedstead and extending forwardly under the bot torn of the same, and connected with a transverse sh aft provided with a ratchet, with which I engages a pawl tohold said shaft in a xed position, and with a detachable crank for operating said shaft to raise or depress the hinged head-section, all of which` will be more fully hereinafter described in detail.
In the drawings, Figure 1 indicates a side elevation of a bedstead embodying my invention, the side rail being broken away, Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section ot' the same.
The letter A indicates a bedstead of the ordinary or any approved construction, and B the side rails thereof. The side rails are rabbeted for a portion of their length, as indicated at C, for the reception and support of the usual slats D. Y
At the forward end or head portion of the bedstead the rabbets are cut away for the reception of a section, D', provided with projections or lugs E at itsfront edge, ,which set between the rabbeted portion of the rails, and are pivoted to a transverse shaft, F, secured to the rails, so that said section may be ,freely elevated or depressed.
(No model.)
The section D at each side is provided with curved rabbets or ledges Gr, as shown in the drawings.
The letter H indicates a lever-frame fulcrumed to a transverse shaft secured at L to the side rails of the bedstead. The upper ends of said lever-frame carry friction-rollers lVl, which set in the rabbets at the sides of the section D', and travel therein as said leverframe is operated, servin g to elevate or depressof the bedstead, to which the belts, bands, or
chains O are secured, as shown. The shaft of said drumor roller projects beyond one of the side rails, and is provided with a rigidly-attached ratchet-wheel, U, with which is adapted to engage a pivoted pawl, V, adapted to env gage the ratchet and holdV the drum or roller to prevent its rotation.
The projecting end of the roller-shaft is squared, so as to receive a detachable key or crank, by means of which the said drum or roller may be rotated to elevate or depress the swinging section of the bedstead.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the above description.
The swinging section, in its normal position, is level or in line with the slats at the bottom of the bedstead. When it is desired to elevate the head and body of the occupant of the bed the roller or drum is rotated by means of the key or crank, winding the belts, bands,` or chains thereon, and drawing upon the leverframe, elevating the upper ends thereof carrying the friction-rollers, and causing said friction-rollers to elevate the swinging or pivoted section to any desired angle, the said section elevating the head portion of the inattress and bedclothing, together with the up- IOO and the transverse drum or roller, with its ratehets or pawls, whereby said section may be elevated or depressed, substantially as specied.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
y ELIAS GONOVER. [L. 8.]
