TTORNEYS.
mPErERS. PHOYO-LIYMOGHAFHER, wAsmN UNTTE STATES ANDREW GLIMIE, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
COMMODE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,313, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed March 23, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW GLIMIE, of Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oommodes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is particularly intended for use in railway-cars, but is adapted to be used in various positions.
The object of the invention is to prevent the unpleasant odor arising from a water-closet, especially such as are used in railway-cars, and to inclose the deposits and convey them away.
The accon'ipanying drawings illustrate a mode of carrying out my invention.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of an apparatus embodying my im provements. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the sacks in position for use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a casing extending on either side of the seat A and inclosing the working parts of the apparatus. B is a box, preferably square, with its bottom, top, and one side open. This box is located immediately under the seat- A". In the bottom of the casing A is an opening, a, in line with the opening in the seat and with the interior of the box B. At the bottom of the box B is a cylindrical rim or band, I), which works within a similar rim or band, 0, attached to the bottom of the casing A, by which means the box B is allowed to rotate as on a center. The rim or band I) is provided with gear-teeth, constituting, in efi'ect, a gear-wheel, D. E is a vertical shaft, provided at its upper end with a crank, f, and carryingat its lower end a gear wheel, G, which meshesinto the wheel D.
(No model.)
Fig. 3 are bags or sacks L, which are made I of paper, and which are preferably waterproofed, and also provided with a deodorizing lining or coating of some suitable description.
The operation is as follows: The drum I is turned so as to convey one of the bags L within the box B and immediately under the seat A as shown in Fig. 1. This bag receives the deposit from the occupant of the seat. The crank f is then turned so as to cause the gearing G D to rotate the box B until it makes a complete revolution. This rotation of the box B twists the top of the bag L and detaches it from the wires K K and allows it to fall, with its contents, through theopening a.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a commode having means for suspending paper boxes under the seat-opening, of the open-bottom box B, adapted to be rotated by the toothed band I), gear-wheel G, and crank-shaft E f, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a water-closet, the combination, with a box, B, under the seatppening, of the wires K K and rolls I J, to supply the boxes, as
described.
