To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LAWRENCE F. Mc- GRATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to containers and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a container especially adapted to be used for freezing cream and the like, and with the above object in view, the container includes a body mounted upon a stand in a horizontal position, and having a dasher turnably mounted therein upon a horizontal axis or shaft. The body includes a cylindrical casting composed of inner and outer shells with a spiral partition interposed between the shells and forming a passage way for the circulation of brine'about the inner shell. The body also includes an outer casing with a packing of non-heat conducting material interposed between the outer shell and the said casing. The cylindrical casting is provided at its top side and at one end with an opening through which the material may be introduced into the casting and the said casting is further provided at the same end and at its lower side, with a valve controlled outlet opening, through which the material may be withdrawn from the casting.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the container with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the body of the container cut on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of parts of the container cut on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The container comprises a. stand 1 upon which a body 2 is mounted in horizontal position. A shaft 3 is journaled in the body 2 and is provided with dasher blades 4 of usual pattern. Any suitable means may be provided for rotating the shaft 3. The body 2 includes a cylindrical casting 5 which is composed of an inner shell 6 and an outer shell 7, joined together by means of a spiral partition 8. The shells 6 and 7 and the partition 8 are integral and constitute a single casting. The spaces between the adjacent convolutions of the partition 8 constitute a passage way-9 whichextends the full length of the casting 5 and through which brine or other refrigerant may be circulated. A closure 16 is pivotally connected with the bodybelow the outlet opening 14, and a bar 17 is pivotally connected at one end with the said closure and at its other end is similarly connected with the valve 15. An arm 18 is supported at the under side of the body 2 and a lever 19 is pivotally connected at one end with the said arm 18. The closure 16 is prowith pins 20 which are slidably received in slots 21 provided at the opposite side portions of the lever 19. A segment 22 depends from the lower side of the body 2 and is provided with notches 23. A springpressed pawl 24 is carried by the lever 19 and is adapted to engage in any one of the notches 23 whereby the lever 19 is held at. an adjusted position with relation to the body 2.
In operation the lever 19 is swung so that the pawl 24 is engaged in the uppermost notch 23 of the segment 22, and consequently the closure 16 is brought under the lower end of the outlet opening 14 and the bar 17 moves the valve 15 so that the same closes across the upper end of the outlet opening 14. The material to be frozen is then poured into the cylinder 5 through the inlet opening 12 and the cap 13 is applied over the upper end of the said opening. The shaft 13 is then rotated whereby the dasher blades 4 are carried around in the material in the casting 5, and the same material is agitated. At the same time the refrigerant is circulated through the passage way '9 and thus the material is frozen. .After the material is frozen the lever 19 is swung in a downward direction approximately to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and consequently the closure 16 is swung away from the outer end of the outlet opening14 and the valve 15 is swung to an inclined position in the upper portion in the said outlet opening. Therefore the material in the casting 5 may gravitate through the opening 14 and if necessary, the forward panel or door 25 of the body 2 may be removed and the material in the mounted upon the container and operatively casting. 5 may be scraped or dragged toward connected With the closure. and into the outlet opening 14.
