Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEFTCE S. W. PEARSALL AND XV. L. PEARSALL, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
PLATE-VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,822, dated February 1, 1859.
To all whom t may copcem:
Be it known that we, SYLVESTER lV. PEAR- sALL and VASHINGTON L. Pia-msnm, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Plate Vises or Holders for Photographs, &c.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot the construction and operation ofI the saine, reterence being had to the annexed drawing, making part ot' this specification, wherein- Figure l, is a plan and Fig. 2, is a vertical section of our said plate vise.
Similar letters denote the saine parts.
Holders or vises for the glass plates that are used in photography, and for receiving the plate holders while being` butl'ed for daguerreotypinO", have been variously constructed, with sliding. changeable and adjustable jaws, retained in position for the )articular sized plate, b v various devices such as pawls, notches or clamps, etc.
(ur invention therefore does not relate broadly to adjustable vise or holder adapted to receive various sizes of plates, but our invention consists in a peculiar spring cla1np ing jaw and releasing l ver. combined with an adjustable sliding jaw fitted to move on a rod and retained by a thumb-screw. These jaws are so mounted on a vertical stud that they can be turned around horizontally into the desired position and held firmly; and said jaws are provided with lips or clamping pieces formed of hard india rubber or gatta percha.
In the drawing a, is a socket to be secured to the bench or table receiving a vertical gudgeon b. from the stock C; and (I, is a rod extending from the said stock c, and formed with a key or feather, as seen in Fig. 3, to guide the movable jaw c, that sets over and slides on said rod (Z, and is secured h v the set screw f1.
g is the clamping jaw attached by the joint pieces and center' pin 71 to the stock c.
'L' is a spring tending to throw the jaw 5./ toward the movable jaw c, and f is a lever formed on or attached to said jaw e, by the depressing of which the jaw e, will be partially turned back.
l, and 2, are the jaws adapted to receive a photographic glass or plate, and formed ofl hard india rubber or gutta percha, screwed or otherwise secured onto the respectivejaws ot' the holder. By this character ot jaw pieces the danger .of cracking the glass is materially lessened, because a more even bearing can be obtainedand the same is not aflected by corrosion from chemicals, or liable to become dirty and soil the plates as in the ordinary metal and wood plate vises.
The inanncr of using thisl vise is as tot lows: Lay one edge of' the glass or other plate against the jaw Q, slide said jaw c, lengthwise ot the rod until the other edge of the plate comes almost to the holding edge l. of the jaw y, then press on the lever f which throws said jaw g, back, the plate drops down and secured in the rabbet ot the jaws by the spring e', acting on said aw y, which thus clamps or releases the plate by a rocking motion given by the joint operation ot the spring vz', and pressure on the lever f. (ur plate vise is thus adapted to any size ot plate, holds the same firmly by jaws not subject to oxidation or injury to the plate, and the whole apparatus can be turned around horizontally, so as to be in the most convenient position, on the gudgeon 7. which, with the other parts, is held firmly by the screw 1.
llfhat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The spring` rocking aw and lever f, in combination with the movable jaw e, substantially as described and shown.
Q. lVe also claim the jaw pieces or facings ot' hard rubber or gutta percha for the purposes and as specitied.
3. And we claim the arrangement of rod (Z, stock c, and gudgeon entering the socket a and having the set screw Z: by which the apparatus is retained in position horizontally as specified.
ln witness whereof we have hereunto set our signatures this twenty ninth day of December 1858.
the
S. lV. PEi-XRSLL. lV. L. PERSALL. llfitnesses:
