Description

(No Model.)
K. McDONAL-D'.
Water-Heater. I No.'2 28 2() 8-; Patented June 1, 1880.
WITNESS s j L L25; 5 J M ATTORNEYS.
STATES KENNETH MCDONALD, or PORTLAND, MAINE.
WATER-H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,208, dated June 1, 1880. Application filed March 25, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, KENNETH MCDONALD, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view; and Fig. at is a detail view, in perspective, of the grate.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to water-heaters; and it consistsin certainimprovements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the cast-iron base, which forms the ashpit, and which supports the body B of the heater. The latter consists of two cylinders, C D, of boiler-iron, connected at the top and bottom by wrought-iron rings E, sufficient space being left between the two cylinders to form the water-reservoir.F.
In the outer cylinder, 0, closely adjoining the connecting-rings E, are fitted pipes G G, for the admission and exit of cold and hot water or steam.
The inner cylinder, D, is provided some distance above the base with two or more rows of pipes, H H, the ends of which are closed, and which extend into the interior of the said cylinder, forming the fire-pot.
Supported upon the base below the firepot is a cross-bar, I, which carries the grate J. The latter is provided with a central pivot, K, passing through an eye, L, in the cross-bar, and having a central vertical opening, M.
Cogs N, formed upon the under side of the rim of the grate, engage a pinion, 0, upon a shaft, P, mounted in the side of the base, and capable of being turned by a wrench or handle, Q.
The cross-bar I, upon which the grate is supported, may also be rocked by means of a suitable wrench, thus tilting and dumping the grate.
The outer cylinder of the heater is incased by a suitable shell or covering, R, of sheet metal, the top or bonnet of which is provided with a door, through which the fire may be fed. Suitable provision is also made for carrying off the products of combustion.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages will be readily understood.
The grate'may be rotated by the mechanism described, thus causing the tubes projecting from the inner cylinder into the lire-pot to break up the fire. It may also be shaken or dumped at will. 7
Owing to the central opening in the pivot there is a central draft, and ashes are prevented from accumulating at this point, where there is least motion when the grate is shaken or turned The tubes which extend from the inner cylinder into the fire-pot expose the-water to the greatest possible heat.
Finally, the construction of my improved heater is extremely simple, inexpensive, and durable.
Two cylinders, connected by rings at the top and bottom to form a-water-reservoir between, have been heretofore employedin steamheaters, and also solid projections for breaking up fuel in stoves using rotary grates are known. Neither of these constructions is broadly claimed in this specification.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to-secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the base A, rocking cross-bar I, having central eye, L, grate J, havin g vertically-perforated pivot K and cogs N, and the pinion O, for operating said grate, with the water-reservoir, constructed as herein described, and having tubes H H extending into the fire-pot, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
KENNETH MCDONALD Witnesses LORENZO TAYLOR, WM. H. JERRIS.
