My invention relates to improvements in corsets and analogous garments, and the same has for its object to provide a corset which will fit perfectly, be comfortable to the wearer, and which will readily conform itself to the figure of the wearer in all positions which the wearer may assume.

Further said invention has for its object to provide a corset which will readily accommodate itself to the varying positions of the wearer, and which will at all times be maintained properly to its adjusted position, and which will not ride up on the person.

Further, said invention has for its object to provide a corset with means for holding the back portion of the garment conformed closely to the contour of the figure, which means will also serve to prevent the corset riding up, and serve to support the stockings upon the wearer.

Further, said invention has for its object to provide a corset having an elastic portion constituting the back panel and a short lining member having an elastic insert and partly covering the inner upper portion of the corset, and having bones or stays therein at each side of said elastic insert in order to maintain the corset closely conformed to the figure.

Further, said invention has for its object to provide a corset having a back portion preferably formed of elastic material, and a lining ex tending downwardly from the upper edge of said back portion to protect the back panel of thecorset from injury by the lower ends of the bones or stays arranged in the lining member.

Other objects will in part be obvious, and in part be pointed out hereinafter.

To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel features of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a face view showing one form of corset constructed according to and embodying my said invention, the same being spread open and as seen from the inside; corner portions of the lining being turned up to show the elastic intermediate back portion;

In said drawing I designates a corset which may be of any type or style, and is here shown as of the open front type of corset or corselette, provided along the opposing vertical edges with suitable cooperating fastening means Ill The body portion I I may be made of any suitable material but is shown made essentially of inelastic material with the back panel or portion I2 thereof formed of elastic material, such as webbing or other material capable of stretching or yielding in all directions, i. e. vertically, horizontally and diagonally.

Upon the inner side of the elastic back panel or portion I2, adjacent the upper end thereof is a lining member I3 of inelastic material which is secured along its upper edge and side edges to the upper edge, and side seams of the corset, respectively, by rows of stitching I4. The lower edge of said lining member I3, which is free from the elastic back panel I2, is arranged parallel to the lower edge of the back panel, but terminates in a horizontal plane about midway between the upper and lower edges of the corset.

The lining member I3 is provided with a plurality of vertical casings I5, which are coextensive in height with the height of said lining member and are secured thereto by marginal rows of stitching I6. Further, said lining member I3 is provided at its. center with a relatively narrow, vertical elastic portion I? to allow said lining to give to yield to a less degree than the back panel I3 when the garment is subjected to strain in a horizontal or circular direction. Within the casings I5 are disposed the usual stays or bones H which serve to hold the lining to shape, and the back panel I2 duly conformed to the back of the wearer.

To the free lower edge of the elastic panel or back member I2, adjacent each of its ends is secured one end of a stocking supporting member I8 whose other end is secured to the lower edge of said panel inwardly of its vertical edges thereof to form a loop. Each loop is provided I with slidable or movable attaching device I9 adapted for securement to the upper outer edge of a stocking. At the lower edge of the body portion of the garment, adjacent each of its vertical front edges, is provided a stocking supporting member 20 to receive an attaching device 2I adapted to engage with the inner upper edge of a stocking.

22 denotes an abdominal support belt or band which is formed of two parts 23, 23 each of which parts is secured by stitching 24, at one of its vertical edges to one of the side seams of the corset, and the other free ends provided with any suitable fastening means as, for example; a lacing 25, whereby said free ends may be secured together nearer to one of the sides of the corset than the other so that the fastening means for the corset will not coincide therewith. The said belt or band 22, when the corset is secured together at its separated edges, will be wholly covered by and concealed below the same.

In the construction shown and described, the elastic back portion I2 is so secured relative to the lining member l3, that the lower edge of said elastic back portion 12 extends below that of the lining portion l3, and that said lining portion 13 and the ends of the casings l5 serve to protect the elastic back panel l2 of the corset against injury or damage which would occur if the lower ends of the stays I! were permitted to come directly into contact with the inner side of said elastic back portion l2.

It is to be noted that by providing the corset with a lining member [3 of less height than the back panel l2- of the corset and securing the same along its sides to sides of the back panel a considerable space is left between the free lower edge of the lining member and the lower edge of the back panel, so that when said elastic back portion [2 is placed under tension by the stocking supporting members I8, 20 the strain will be distributed over the entire elastic back portion and hold said back of the corset firmly against and conformed to the figure of the wearer.

Further, it is to be noted that an advantage accruing to the invention is due to the providing of the separate lining member which makes possible the convenient boneing or staying of the garment while leaving the lower edge thereof free, and thus permitting of the raising and turning up on the said lower rear edge of the elastic back panel l2, without disturbing the remainder of the garment.

This application is in part a continuation of my earlier application, filed April 27, 1937, Serial No. 139,189.

Having thus described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. A corset including a two-way stretch back panel coextensive with the height of the garment, a lining member underlying said back member and extending from the top edge thereof with its lower edge free and terminating on a line substantially midway of the height of the garment, said lining member comprising an in termediate panel of horizontally elastic material, and stocking-supporting members secured to the lower edge of said elastic back panel. 2. A corset including a two-way stretch back panel coextensive with the height of the garment, a lining member underlying said back member and extending from the top edge thereof with its lower edge free and terminating on a horizontal line substantially midway of the height of the garment, said lining member being formed of inelastic material and having a relatively-narrow, vertical intermediate portion of horizontally-yielding elastic material, and stocking-supporting members secured to the lower edge of said elastic back panel.

3. A corset including a two-way stretch back panel coextensive with the height of the garment, an abdominal support secured to the vertical side edges of said back panel adjacent the lower portion thereof, a lining member underlying said back member and extending downwardly from the top thereof with its lower edge free and.

terminating on a line coincident with the upper edge of said abdominal support; said lining member being formed of inelastic material and having an intermediate panel of horizontally yielding elastic material, and stocking-supporting members secured to the lower edge of said, back panel.
