Description
N. THOMAS. Washing-Machine.
No. 228,139. Patented May 25, 18 80.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NIXON THOMAS, OF DUPONT, INDIANA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,139, dated May 25, 1880.
Application filed October 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NIXON THOMAS, of Du pont, in the county of Jefferson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a side elevation of the device, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of the deice. Fig.3 is a detail view, shown in elevation, to illustrate the relative position of the stirrup.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved device for increasing the efficiency of those washing-machines that operate by pounding the clothes.
A represents the support, that is composed of the main arm a, and the side arms, I) b, which are pivoted to it at c. All these arms a b b are curved, so that when secured to the edge of the tub they may support the plungers centrally over the tub, and all of them are provided on their inner faces, near their lower ends, with studs (1, on which are pivoted the jaws f.
To secure the device in position the edge of the tub B is grasped between the jaws f and the ends of the arms a b b, and the thumbscrews 9 turned so as to sufficiently throw out the tops of the buttons f, and thereby force inward their bottoms.
The forked upper end of the main arm a is pivoted to the hanging bent arm 0, so that it can move in a vertical plane. This arm 0 supports the guiding-rod D, that extends perpendicularly downward. Immovably fixed on the rod D is the hanger E, to whose depend ent slatted end is pivoted the forked lever F by a bolt, h, that passes through the slot t'.
Encircling the guiding-rod D, between the arms of the hanger E, is the stirrup Gr, whose downward-bent arms are fastened at their I ends to the cross-head H, that is provided with the sockets k, in which the handles 6 of the plungers I are held by the set screws min such a manner that the said plungers I can be turned around to any desired position.
To the arms of the stirrup G the arms of the forked lever F are fastened, so that by means of the said lever F the cross-head H and'plungers I can be moved up and down in the operation of washing; and at any time during the washing operation the operator can at will, and by means of the lever F, give a half-revolution to the rod D and its connections in order to cause the pluugers I to strike upon fresh surfaces of the clothes.
By withdrawing the pin n, that rigidly holds the armO in position, as shown in the drawings, the said arm 0 and all its attachments may be turned-upward clear of the tub and its contents.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. The within-described washing-machine, composed of the support A, hanging arm 0, hanger E, stirrup G, cross-head H, lever F, and plungers I, constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a washing-machine, the support A, composed of curved arms a b I), pivoted together and provided with studs d, jaws f, and thumb-screws g, substantially as herein shown and described, in combination with the arm 0, that supports the operating parts of the machine, as herein set forth.
3. The combination, with plungers ll, of the rod D, slotted hanger E, lever F, and stirrup G, as and for the purpose specified.
NIXON THOMAS.
