1 Claim.
This invention relates to hogsheads and more particularly to a hogshead designed for use in shipment of tobacco.
An object of this invention is to provide a hogshead which is made out of a pair of separable side wall sections and removable heads, the side wall sections being so constructed that when the hogshead is not in use the sections may be separated and laid flat and stacked one upon the other, the sections having interengaging liners at each end so that when in stacked condition a relatively solid pile will be provided.
Another object of this invention is to provide .a hogshead formed out of separable side wall sections, the staves forming the side wall sections being formed of straight material so that the staves when the sections are separated will lie flat on a plane surface.
A further object of this invention is to provide a hogshead of this kind wherein the material of which the hogshead is constructed may be formed out of ply wood, the several plies being glued together by a glue having a composition which is water-resistant and is non-injurious to the tobacco.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hogshead of this kind wherein the liners at each end of the side walls may be formed out of ply wood, the liners being formed from separate blocks which are secured one pair to each stave or being formed from a single strip of material which is provided with notches or kerfs through a portion of the material forming the liner.
Still another object of this invention is to pro- 4 vide a hogshead of this type which may have the staves thereof spaced apart if desired, so as to provide an air space between the longitudinal edges of the staves or if desired the staves may it be spaced close together so as to provide a sub-- stantially air-tight structure.
To the foregoing objects and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction. combination and arrangement of parts as will. be more specifically referred Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal section of a modified form of this hogshead structure,
Figure 5 is a plan view of one of the side wall members,
Figure 6 is a detail end elevation of a pair of side wall members in nested and knocked down form,
Figure '7 is a fragmentary sectional view through the hinge connections between the two side wall sections,
Figure 8 is a fragmentary horizontal section through the liner portion of one of the side wall members,
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 8 but showing a modified form of liner, and
Figure 10 is a view similar to Figure 9 but showing a further modifier liner structure.
Referring to'the drawings, the character H designates generally a hogshead which is formed from a pair of side wall sections Ill and H. An upper removable head I2 is disposed interiorly of the side wall sections l0 and l I when the side wall sections are in assembled condition and a bottom head I3 is also disposed within the side wall sections when assembled.
The side wall sections l0 and H are substantially identical in construction and the following description of one of the side wall sections will apply equally as well to the other side wall section. The side wall section It! comprises a set or series of elongated spaced parallel stave members M which are formed preferably out of ply wood and each stave M is formed from a straight strip of material so that when the two side wall sections it and ii are assembled a cylindrical body will be provided. Through the provision of a cylindrical side wall structure, the space usually taken up by the bulge in the conventional hogshead will be eliminated so that these hogsheads may be placed close together when filled with material in addition to being stacked one upon the other. The staves M are of equal width and length in order that in the event one or more of may be removed and a new stave inserted in its place. The staves 14 of the side wall member I ll 5 are secured together by means of a pair of intermediate metal bands i5 and. [6 which are disposed in parallel relation between the ends of the staves M and the bands I5 and I5 are secured directly against the outer sides of those staves M of theset, other than the end staves M of the set by means of fastening devices I1 and I8 respectively. These fastening devices may be in the form of rivets, clinched nails or any other suitable fastening device and as many fastening devices l1 nad 13 may be used for each stave as is desired.
An upper metallic band I9 is secured directly to the upper end of the outer sides of those staves M of the set, other than the end staves M of the set by means of the fastening devices 23 and a lower metallic band 21 is secured directly to the lower end of the outer side of those staves M of the set, other than the end staves l 4 of the set by the fastening devices 22. l
The bands I5, 16, I8 and 2| are of like form. Each band includes an intermediate portion Id and a pair of end portions it which are offset with respect to the ends of the intermediate portion I5 Each terminal portion I6 consists of an inner outwardly directed inclined part W and a horizontal part M of greater length than the part Id The latter is interposed between the part 2% and an end of the intermediate portion [5 and not only functions as an abutment for a purpose to be referred to, but further maintains the part 21 spaced from the outer side of an end stave M of the set. The end portions 16 of a band constitutes positioners for yoke-shaped connector members. The connector members employed in connection with the bands of each side wall section are designated 23, 24.
The members 23 are of like form and each has its bight in the form of a pair of spaced aligned barrels 25. The members 24 are of like form and each has its bight in the form of a single barrel 3|] for disposing between the barrels 25 of a member 23. Each of the connector members 23 and 24 includes outer and inner spaced parallel arms 26, 2'1 respectively merging at their outer ends into a bight. The arm 21 is of greater length than the arm 26.
The horizontal parts 25 of the band provide for disposing the connector members at the desired position relative to the side wall sections to, H. The connector members are disposed in overlapping relation with respect to the parts 2 K of the end terminals 5 of the bands. When the members are disposed in overlapping relation, as stated, the arms 27 thereof abut the parts Hi and are arranged against the outer sides of the end staves M of the sets of staves, the bights of the connector members extend laterally from the end edges of the bands, the arms 25 of said mem bers abut the outer faces of the parts 2! of the terminal portions Id are arranged in the manner aforesaid they and the outer staves of the sets of staves and the end terminal portion I5 of the bands are secured together by bolts 28 and fastener members 29 in the form of rivets or clinched nails.
When the connector members have been secured to the side wall sections 10, H in a man ner as aforesaid, the bights of the members 24 are extended into the bights of the members 23, whereby the barrel 33 of a member 24 is arranged between and aligns with the barrels 25 of a member 23.
The side wall forming sections l and ll are to be detachably secured together to form the body of the hogshead and for this purpose there are correlated with the connector members 23, 24 pintle members 3|. A pintle member 3! is common to a member 23 and a member 24 when the bights of such members are interengaged. In the present instance, these pintle members 3i When the said members are formed of a shaft 32 and a head 33 at one end thereof. An opening 34 is provided adjacent the opposite end of the shaft 32 and a wire 35 is adapted to be threaded through the opening 34 and the ends of the wire 35 are then brought together and twisted so as to thoroughly seal the pintle 3i in the connector barrels 25 and 30. In the present instance, there is provided a single pintle for each pair of bands but if desired, an elongated pintle may be provided which may extend entirely through all of the aligned barrels 25 and 3G.
The barrel section [0 at each end thereof is provided with a liner or inwardly projecting member 36 forming a shoulder 31 at its inner edge against which a head member is adapted to engage. The liner 36 as shown in Figure 8 is formed from a relatively small block of ply wood and as shown in Figure 8 there may be a single block or liner member 36 adjacent each end of a stave M. The liner members 36 are secured to the stave [4 by means of fastening devices 31 in the form of rivets, clinched nails or the like.
In Figure 9 there is disclosed a modified form of liner 35 wherein a single strip of ply wood extends to full length of each end of the side wall member IE] and this liner 36 is provided With a plurality of notches or kerfs 38 which eX- tend through at least two plies of wood forming the liner, leaving the remaining ply unnotched and this remaining ply is adapted to confront the inner side of the stave members M. The notch 38 has parallel sides and may be cut through by a conventional saw, the width of the notch 38 being sufficient to permit the bending of the side wall member H) in a semi-circular configuration when the side wall member is being assembled.
In Figure there is disclosed a further modification of the liner wherein a liner 36 is provided and in this form the liner 36 is also formed from a single narrow strip of ply wood and a V- shaped kerf or notch 39 is provided which extends through at least two plies of the liner leaving the remaining ply 4i) uncut and this remaining ply is adapted to face the inner sides of the staves It.
Through the provision of a side wall structure formed substantially entirely out of ply wood, the staves forming the main part of the side wall sections will retain their straight configuration when the hogshead is packed with tobacco so that after the packed tobacco has been removed the side wall members may be released and stacked in nested form one upon the other. Furthermore, the provision of the head members 12 and i3 formed from ply wood provides a structure wherein the heads will not readily crack or break and this structure also eliminates the necessity for providing braces across the head.
In the use of this hogshead, the side wall members Ill and H may be assembled by first inserting the pintles 3| through one series of connector barrels and with the side wall members I0 and H lying substantially flat in edge abutting relation. After one edge of the side wall members iii and H has been secured by the detachable fastening members 3|, the combined side wall including the two sections Ill and H may be bent in a circle and the free ends secured together by the detachable fastening members 31. .At this time the head members [2 and I3 are not in position but the bottom head member 53 may be inserted through either the top or the bottom of the cylindrical body formed by the connected side wall members I0 and l l by distorting the configuration of the body and then inserting the bottom member 13. This member I3 is then moved downwardly until it rests upon the shoulder 34 provided by the lower liner members 36. The body may then be filled with tobacco which may be packed in any suitable manner and after the tobacco has been properly packed, the upper head l2 may be inserted by removing the uppermost pintle 3| connecting one end of the side wall sections Ill and H together so that these sections may be spread apart a distance to distort the configuration of the upper portion of the hogshead to admit of the insertion of the upper head l2. When the upper head I! has been inserted beneath the liner 36 and engages the shoulder 34 thereof, the released pintle 3| from the upper connector barrels 25 and 30 may be reinserted.
What I claim is:
A knockdown hogshead comprising a pair of oppositely disposed side wall sections of like form each consisting of a set of spaced endwise aligned parallel straight staves of corresponding length and width, spaced metallic superposed bendable bands of like form having intermediate portions positioned against the outer sides of those staves other than the end staves of the set, each band having angle-shaped terminal portions offset with respect to its intermediate portion and spaced from the outer sides of the end staves of the set, means for securing said intermediate portions to the staves against which they are positioned, a connector member endwise abutting, overlapping and extended laterally from each end terminal of a band and bearing against the outer side of an end stave and the outer side of a terminal portion, means for securing each member to a terminal portion and an end stave, means for detachably connecting the connector members of one side wall section to the connector members of the other side wall section, superposed spaced liners positioned against the end terminal portions of the inner face of each stave of each set, means engaging in a stave and in the liners arranged against the inner face of such stave for securing them together, head members removably engaging the inner edges of said liners when the side wall sections are detachably secured together, the liners on one stave of a set being spaced from the liners on adjacent staves of the set, and the holdfast means for securing the intermediate portion of certain of said bands to the staves of said sections permanently engaging in said liners.
