Filed Aug. 3. 1939 HrTOR/VEK Patented Apr. 21, 1942 SHOE Frank Brewin, St. Louis County, Mo, assignor to International Shoe Company, St. Louis, Mo., a corporation of Delaware Application August 3, 1939, Serial No. 288,125
3 Claims.
The present invention relates generally to shoes, and more particularly to the binding of the upper and tothe throat of a ladies pump.
An object of the present invention is to provide a ladies pump having a novel upper binding and throat.
Another object is to provide a ladies pump having a novel continuous elastic binding for the upper.
Another object is to provide a ladies pump having a novel elastic throat which is smooth and without bulkiness.
Another object is to provide a ladies pump which has a novel elastic throat.
Another object is to provide a ladies pump which is constructed to comfortably fit the foot at the throat.
Another object is to provide a ladies pump which is stretchable at the throat, but which is reinforced to substantially prevent stretching along the remainder of the foot insert outline.
:Another object is to provide a ladies pump which is simple in construction, yet effective to fulfill the foregoing and other objectives.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a pump incorporating the teachings of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the throat fragment of the shoe shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a view of one side of an upper blank from which the shoe shown in Fig. 1 is formed, an element of the present invention being disclosed in associated relation therewith; and,
Fig. 6 is a view of the other side of the blank shown in Fig. 5, another element of the present device being shown in operative relation therewith.
Referring to the drawing more particularly by reference numerals, it) indicates generally a ladies shoe known as a pump which includes an upper H, a heel 12, an outer sole [3, and a lining I l.
An elastic binding tape it extends as a continuous member around the foot insert opening ll, being secured to the upper H by stitching l8 (Figs. 3 and 5) and to and between the upper II and the lining M by stitching I9. At throat 2B the stitching l9 falls away from the line of the stitching 18 along substantially the arcuate line 2| shown in Fig. 2, the lining I4 being cut away at the throat 29 to follow the arcuate line 2| (Fig. 3), leaving a flexible throat 2% comprising that portion of the upper H, the tape l6, and a reinforcing elastic member 22 (Fig. 6) between the arcuate stretch of stitching 2| and the 0pposed edge of the opening IT. The underside of the upper l4 beneath the elastic member 22 is skived to thin the throat area, providing a light throat 20.
A line of stitching 23 (Figs. 1 and 4) extends from substantially the point 24 rearwardly around the heel to a similar point 25 on the other side of the shoe Ill. The stitching 23 extends through the upper ll, the lining l4 and the tape it to reinforce the tape Hi to prevent longitudinal stretching in this area.
In the construction of the shoe Hi, the tape I6 is secured by stitching H3 in a position to overlie the outer side 26 of an upper blank 21 (Fig. 5), the short elastic member 22 being simultaneously stitched to the inner side 28 of the blank 21, the reinforcing elastic member 22 having been previously secured in place by glue, or the like. The member 22 may be disposed below the stitching it, if preferred. The tape Iii is rolled over to overlie the inner side 28 of the upper ll (blank 2i) and the lining I4 is disposed in contiguous relation therewith in a manner to imprison the tape it between it and the upper H (Fig. 4). The lining M is, of course, of a configuration to drop away at the throat 26 in the manner shown in Fig. 3. The lining M is secured to the tape 16 and the upper II by the stitching l9. Subsequently, the stitching 23 is applied as shown to reinforce the elastic tape IS. The assembly is stitched at the rear, lasted, and heeled to form a finished shoe.
The skived area of the upper ll both reduces the bulkines's of the throat 20 and allows the material thereof to stretch. The elastic member 22 returns the skived area to its normal position after stretching, since it is glued to that area. The tape it assists in this function.
It is apparent that there has been provided a ladies pump which has an elastic throat and an elastic tape which extends as a continuous piece around the full foot opening ll from the rear seam, but which is reinforced throughout a predetermined portion. Manifestly, the present pump l0 fulfills all of the objects and advantages sought therefor.
It is to be understood that the foregoing description and accompanying drawing have been given by way of illustration and example, and not for purposes of limitation, the invention being limited only by the claims which follow,
What is claimed is:
1. A pump comprising an upper having an opening defining edge, continuous elastic means secured to the opening defining edge of the upper, other elastic means at the throat of the pump beneath and adjacent to the throat portion of the upper cooperating with said first means at the throat, said two means acting with the associated portion of the upper to provide an elastic throat, and stitching extending through the upper and the first means throughout a predetermined portion of the length of the latter and spaced from the opening defining edge to substantially upper over the skived area, said lining being cut away over a portion of the throat area leaving an elastic throat portion of upper, tape, and elastic member.
3. A pump comprising an upper including a foot opening defining edge, a lining secured to the upper, a continuous elastic tape of substantial width secured to the upper along the opening edge, said tape covering the edge, said lining being cut away at the throat of the pump, said upper being skived at the throat area, an elastic "member secured to and against the upper over this area in a manner to draw the area back to prevent stretching of the first means throughout this length.
2. A pump comprising an upper including a foot opening defining edge, a lining secured to the upper, a continuous elastic tape secured to the upper along the opening edge, the upper being skived on the inner side in the throat area, and an elastic member afiixed to and against the normal relation after stretching, and stitching securing the-lining, the tape, and the upper along 'the upper edges thereof throughout the major length of the opening edge, said stitching following the cut-away of the lining at the throat leaving a flexible area of tape, elastic member, and upper thereabove.
