BATTERY POS T CONNECTOR Filed May 10, 1940 Suma/wkn,
l mi@ .H1/lily Eisley@ v A. H. ElsLER? .JR 2,278,307" I Patented Mar. 31, 1942 UNITED sTATEs OFFICE 2 Claims.
. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in battery post connectors.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a battery post connector especially designed for automobile batteries and of a construction to eliminate corrosion of the post and conductor attached thereto, the post of the battery having a polygonal head and the construction of the conductor being such that th'e same may be attached to a selected side of the polygonal head without unusual distortion of the conductor.
A further object of the invention is to provide a battery post connector of the foregoing character wherein the head of the post is of greater diameter than the post so that the conductor may be attached to the head laterally of the post carrying the head and being operative to eliminate the formation of corrosion at the connection.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a battery post constructed in accordance with the present invention, aconductor cable attached thereto being fragmentarily illustrated;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the assembled post and conductor;
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2,y showing a head of polygonal formation carried bythe upper end of the battery post, with crossed openings or bores in Figure 8 is a cross-sectional view taken on line- 8--8 of Figure 7.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the battery post connector is especially designed for auto mobile batteries, the battery post is designated by the reference character IIJ and carries at its upper end a laterally enlarged head II of polyg f onal formation in plan view as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, the same being illustrated as of triangular formation with ythree flat side walls I2,
while the corners of the head are cuty away to provide relatively short at Walls I3. It is to be understood that the head II may be attached to the upper end of the post IU after the cell cover has been placed in position and the proper seal made about th'e post. Crossed holes or bores I4 extend horizontally through the head II, a bore opening through each of the longer sides I2 and a shorter corner side I3 for the selective passage of an anchor bolt for securing a conductor cable t0 the head of the battery post Ill.
The conductor, designatedin general by the reference character I5, comprises the usual core of wires IB, shown in Figure 8, that has the usual insulation wrapping or covering I1, the insulation covering Il of the conductor cable being cut away at the end thereof as shown in Figures 3 and 7 to expose the core of wires I6. A copper blade I8 has one end thereof embedded in the exposed conductor wires I6 as shown in Figures 3 and 7 and lateral flanges AI9 carried by the embedded end of the copper strip or blade I8' are wrapped around the exposed core wires I6 as shown in Figure 8 with the outer ends of some of said core wires I6 bent backwardly over said iianges I9 for securing the copper strip or blade I8 to the conductor I5.
A metallic head 20 of general cup shape encloses the end of the conductor I5 and has a pocket 2| therein to accommodate the exposed ends of the core wires IE. A Ablade-like stem 22 projects outwardly from the closed end of the cup-shaped head 2l) of the conductor and as shown in Figures 4 and 6, a longitudinally extending channel 23 is formed in each of the opposite sides of said blade-like stem. The copper blade I8 carried by the conductor body I5 is embedded in the blade-like stem 22 as shown in Figures 3 and 4 and opposite edges of said copper blade I8 are notched as at lila to facilitate anchoring engagement with the blade-like stern. An opening 24 is formed in the outer end of the copper blade I8 of the conductor and registers with an opening 25 in the blade-like stem for the passage of a bolt for securing the conductor to the head of the battery post.
In attaching the conductor to the battery post Il), the blade-like stem 22 carried by the head 2o of the conductor I5 is selectively engaged with one of the flat sides I2 of the battery post head II with saidat sides I2 of the head interi-lttingly engaged with the adjacent channel portion 23 of the blade-like stem. A clamping plate 26 is then placed in the other channel portion 23 and a screw bolt 21 is then passed through an opening in the clamping plate 26, the registering openings 24 and 25 and the aligned opening I4 in the battery post head Il, the headed end 28 of said bolt 21 being engaged with the clamping plate 26 as illustrated, While the threaded end 29 of said bolt passes through the opposite shorter corner or side I3 of the battery head for the reception of a lock Washer 30 and a lock nut 3|.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein Without-departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a battery post connector, the combination with a battery post having an enlarged head 'of polygonal formations dening a plurality of obtusely angled flatsides, said head having a plurality of intersecting horeslextending transversely thereof with the bores respectively opening at the fiat sides intermediate the ends thereof, of a conductor having a head at one end thereof with a reduced blade-like stem projecting from the end of the head with the sides of the stem and adjacent end portions of the head dening obtusely angled faces, the stem being atly engaged with a at side of the post head and the adjacent end face of the conductor head being engaged with the adjacent flat side of the post head, said stem having an opening therein registering With a bore in the post head and a lock bolt extending through the registering opening and bore for retaining the conductor engaged with the battery post head.
2. A. battery post connector as set forth in claim 1, wherein said stem has a channel formation inopposite sides thereof with a side of the .battery post head received in one channel formation and a clamping plate in the other channel formation.;
