Description

J. B.TWATBR. GAR COUPLING.
N0.22,776. Patented Feb. 1, 1859.
OFFICE J. B. ATWATER, OB BERLIN VISOONSIN.
" CAR-COUPLING.
Specificacion of Letters Patent N0. 22,776, dated February 1, 1859.
T 0 all whom Lt mag concern:
Be it known that I, J. B. ATWATER of Berlin, in the county 0f Green Lake und State 0f Visconsin, h2we invented certain new und usefui Improvements in Railroad- Cm Conpiers; and I do hereby declare that the foiiowing is a f1111, dem, and exuct des :ription 0f the saina, reference being had 10 the accmnpanying drawings and t0 fhe ivfters of reference marked thereon.
The nature 0f .my invention consists in zu ranging and combining together the several pzuts which Will be hereinafte1 described.
In fhe annexed drnwings 1naking z\ part 01 this specificat-ion, A represents the body (d? Hie conpling.
B represents the front m ifnce which is provided with a sqnare hole into Which the 1ink asses in order that it may reveive the pin.
C, is a rod, which is provided a1; one end with a crnnk, the other end secu1ed in suitable bearings nnder the body 0'f the umpling and is provided near its oxtramity wiih a tnmbler c, said tnmbler piaying throngh a slot in the underside of the body of the conp1er.
E, represents a lever which has its 1'111- crnn1 at m in the upright F. One end 0f this iever connects with che pin (Z, and the other 011d is connected by means of connecting piece D, with the crank 0n 10d C.
0 is a footpiece on lever E.
z is a (1001", 01, platfor1n, which is hinged at one end to the body of the conpler the other end falling free1y 0f its own gravity 011 the 1ink, serves to keep it in proper position.
m, n, represent two friction rollers which I place in front 0f the pin so (hat when dra.wing np a heavy grade the pin 1nay be readily disconnected by pressing upon 1ever E.
It will be readily perceived that this coupler is 21 se1f connector. VVhen it is desired 130 connect two cars, the severa1 arts seen. in Fig. 3 stand in the position Seen in that fignre. The tn1nb]er c, is erect; anti the pin is raised in 01de1 that the iink may pass in. Vhen the link e, strikes the tumbler it is thrown down in the position seen in Fig. 1, as i falls it turns the rod C, which by n1eans 0f i.ts crank, operates upon the piece D, and it in turn upon the lever E, which serves to rhrow the pin (Z, down into the 1ink and tnus secures it.
The link und pin d0 not difier materinliy f10n1 those in ordinary nse and when the cars are drawing a1e no 1n0re iiabie t0 sep a1ate.
Vhen it .is desired t0 uncouple a car the pin is very easi1y thrown np, by pressing with the foot upon the foot piece 0, 0f 1ever E,as the pin rises the tnmbler c, is also e]evated und at the szune tixne the pin leaves the 1ink the tumbler shoves it ont, so that it can not remain nnder fhe pin in position for connecting.
I do not clai1n the employ1nent 0f any oi:' the parts 0f this coupler co be new, nncombined and difi'erently arranged, as I am aware thatthe pin has been thrown down in other couplers by means 0f the link, pressing agaiiist such parts as aff'ect it hence I disc1ai1n 311 other 1nodes 0f effecting the 1esnlt herein attained, confining myself t0 die arrangement herein specified t0 wit:
The arrange1nent- .of the tu1nbler c, rod C, cnnnecting; piece D, lever E, which is provided with af0ot piece, opin (Z rollers m, n, anri d001 er platforrn z, the whole being combined anc1 operated in the manner and f01 the purpose herein specifieci.
J. B. ATWATER.
