9 Claims.
This invention relates to shower attachments and more particularly to attachments for bath tubs to enable the same to be used either for shower baths or for tub baths.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an attachment adapted for ready installation on existing bath tubs to enable their use for shower baths without interfering with their useability for tub baths.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shower attachment for bath tubs which will provide a plurality of sprays originating at different points and in which the several sprays may be selectively or concurrently controlled.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a shower attachment which may readily be 'adjusted as to angle and height so as to be readily adaptable for installation on various types of tubs and to satisfy the desires of different users.
The above and other objects and advantages of the invention including novel features of construction will be apparent from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation with the adjacent side cut away of a bath tub having applied theret a shower attachment embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a central section with parts in ele vation of the front shower unit;
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the front shower unit with the upper boss removed;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the upper boss;
Figure 5 is a front elevation 0f the back shower unit; and
Figure 6 is a central vertical section of the unit of Figure 5.
As shown in Figure l a bath tube of conventional form indicated generally at l0 has a faucet l2 provided at the forward end thereof controlled by the usual valves indicated at le. To the discharge faucet l2 there is permanently or semipermanently attached a front shower unit indicated generally at I6. A rear shower unit indicated at I8 is connected to the front shower unit by a flexible rubber hose 2D which may extend around the side of the bath tub adjacent the top thereof and being secured in place if desired by rubber suction cups 22.
The front shower unit comprises a nipple 24 adapted to be firmly attached to the faucet l2 and terminating in a ball member 25 extending substantially horizontally into the bath tub. The
The ball member 26 of the nipple is received in a bore in the end of a body member 28, a suitable packing 30 being inserted therebetween. Plates 32 secured to the body 28 by screws 34 engage the sides of the ball member 2S so as to secure the body thereto in any desired adjusted position. The body member 28 is provided with a central bore Eii communicating with the passage through the nipple. At its forward end the bore may be closed by a valve 38 controlled by a handle 40 to establish or cut off communication of the bore with a downwardly discharging orifice 42 for discharging water directly into the tub. The bore also communicates with `a pair of lateral valve chambers 44 and iii controlled respectively by valves 43 and 5U having handles 52 and 54. The valve chambers All and 46 communicate with upwardly extending passages 56 and 58 formed at one end of elongated slots in the upper face of the body 28.
A boss unit 6G is formed with a corresponding smooth lower face having slotsl 62 and 64 therein to register respectively with the slots 56 and 58 when the units are assembled. Preferably the lower plate on the boss is formed with openings 66 through which machine screws or the like may be threaded into tapped holes in the upper face of the body 28.
The boss unit 6l! is provided with a large cylindrical bore 68 communicating with the slot B2 and with a side bore 10 communicating with the slot 54. The bore 'It terminates in a connector nipple 'l2 to which the hose 2i! may be connected. A pipe 'M is slidable in the bore 68 and may be clamped in any desired vertical position therein by forming the upper end of the bore as a split sleeve or the like. A hollow block i6 carried by the upper end of the pipe 'Hl has a shower head 18 adiustably secured thereto by means of a ball and socket joint.
The rear unit i8 is formed by a pad B0 of sponge rubber or the like having a central opening therein provided with a peripheral groove. The pad El) may be secured to a wall of the tub in any desired position by rubber suction cups 82 mounted adjacent the end thereof. A shower head formed by a hollow sheet metal body 84 is adapted to be mounted in the central opening in the pad 80. As shown, the shower head is formed by a perforated convex front plate 86 crimped peripherally at 88 to a rear cup-shaped unit 90. A double extension 92 on the unit 90 lies in an upwardly extending groove in the pad 80 and is adapted to have the end of hose 20 connected thereto. When the shower head 84 is assembled in the pad 80 the peripheral head 88 lies within the groove in the pad to hold the shower head rmly in place therein.
In using the attachment of the present invention the front and rear units may be installed in a bath tub as indicated in Figure 1, and the desired mixture of hot and cold water may be adjusted through the usual valves I4. For this purpose the handle 40 may be turned to open valve 38 so that the temperature of the mixed water may be tested at the orice 42. For purposes of the usual tub bath the valve 38 may also be opened so that water will ow directly into the tub through orice 42.
After the temperature of the water is suitably adjusted the valve 38 may be closed and either or both of valves 48 or 50 may be opened. In the event that only the Valve 48 is opened water will be supplied only through the bore 56, bore 68 and pipe 14 to the front shower head 18. If valve 58 is opened water will flow through the bores 58 and 'I0 and hose 20 and will be sprayed from the rear shower unit I8 upon the back of a person in the tub. By the use of the present invention it will be apparent that a person in the tub may be showered while in a seated position and without the necessity of turning to bring the various parts of his body within the range of the front shower head 18.
While only one embodiment of the invention has been shown and described it will be understood that this is intended to be illustrative only and is not to be taken as a delinition of the scope of the invention, reference being had for this purpose to the appended claims.
