1 Claim.
This invention relates to a double lock pipe wrench, the general object of the invention being to provide means for providing a firm grip of the jaws of the wrench on an object without danger of the jaws slipping and also to provide means whereby the wrench can be easily released from the object by pressing on a certain part of the wrench.
This invention also consists in certain otherfeatures of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational View of the improved wrench with the casing in section.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevational view with the casing in elevation.
Figure Sis a section on the line 3-3 of Figur 1.
In these views the numeral I indicates the handle of the wrench which is provided at its inner end with a thickened part 2 having the teeth 3 on its end edge, this part 2 forming one jaw of the wrench. The other jaw is formed of an L-shaped part 4, the short arm of which has the teeth 5 on its inner edge so that this part forms the second jaw which is opposite th jaw 2. The long arm of the part 4 is of less thickness than the short arm as shown at 6 and this part has the teeth I on both side edges thereof though the free end portion of this part 6 is plain and is portion of the casing adjacent the recesses I4 is rough as shown at I B to form a finger hold so that the casing can be rocked on the pin 9. As will be seen this part I6, the pin 9 and the pin 63 are arranged in a triangle so that by pressing upon the part It the parts will be moved to release the pin I3 from an outer tooth I and the projection I2 so that th jaw member 4 can be adjusted toward or away from the jaw 2 and by swinging the wrench downwardly while pressure is exerted on the part I6 the jaw member 4 will move outwardly until stopped by the pin I5 engaging the inner or front ends of the recesses I4. Then the wrench can be placed on an object and the jaw member 5 pushed toward the jaw member 2 to grip the object.
The notches I should be so spaced that when the jaws are pushed together they will be a little further apart at the ends of the jaws than at the bases and this will make up the difference between any two notches. While the parts are in holding position the harder the pull of the not provided with teeth. A casing 8 has the parts I and 6 passing through the same with a pin 9 connecting a portion of the casing with the part I adjacent the jaw 2 and at the rear end of the casing a short partition I0 forms part of the casing and separates the rear end of the part 6 from the adjacent portion of the part I and a leaf spring II is fastened to the part I adjacent the jaw 2 and bears against this partition I0 and tends to hold the part I with its jaw 2 having a pointed projection I2 engaging a tooth I on the inner edge of the part 6. A wedge-shaped pin I3 passes through the casing and has its wedgeshaped part engaging a tooth on the outer edge of the part 6. A recess I4 is formed in the rear part of the casing between the partition It and a side edge portion thereof and a pin I5 passes through the rear end of the part 6 and is adapted to pass into the recesses I4 to limit the outward movement of the jaw member 4. The side edge wrench on the object the greater the hold the jaws will have on the object and when the handle I is pushed down the dog or projection l2 will automatically go into the right notch with the pin I3 pressing down and the dog I2 pressing up the jaws will have a firm grip so that there is no possible chance of the parts slipping.
When the parts are in the position shown in Figure 1 and there is no strain on the handle I there should be a little play between the lower part of the casing 8 and that part of the handle I surrounded by this portion of the casing. This permits the casing 8 to swing or rotate lightly which forces the pin I3 into a notch I. When a strain comes on the handle I in the use of the wrench the handle will engage the casing and thus a portion of the strain will be carried by the casing and a portion by the pin 9. This prevents all the strain being carried by the pin 9.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the claimed as new is:
In a wrench of the class described, a casing, a handle part passing into the casing adjacent a side edge thereof and having a jaw on its inner end located outwardly of the front end of the invention, what is casing, a pivot pin connecting the handle part adjacent the jaw to the casing, an L-shaped jaw member having its short arm forming a jaw which is opposite the first-mentioned jaw and its long arm forming a shank which passes through the casing adjacent the other side edge thereof, said other side edge being of greater length than the first side edge, a short partition in the rear of the casing between th handle part and the shank, a spring carried by the handle part and engaging the partition, a dog carried by the first jaw and the shank having notches in its inner side edge for receiving the dog under the action of the spring, the other side edge of the shank having notches therein, a pin passing through the outer side edge of the casing adjacent the front end of the casing for engaging the last-mentioned notches, a finger part at the rear of the casing on the side edge thereof adjacent the shank for imparting rocking movement to the parts against the spring to release the dog and pin from the notches, the pivot pin, the lastmentioned pin and the finger part forming a triangle, whereby by pressing upon the finger part the parts will be moved to a position to release the dog and pin from the notches of the shank to permit outward movement of the shank and its jaw when the wrench is swung downwardly and a projection on the rear end of the shank for engaging the casing to limit outward movement of the shank and its jaw.
