PROTECTIVE SHIELD V Filed April l, 1940 ATTORNEY:
Patented Mar. 10, 1942 .2,275,787 'PROTECTIVESHIELD William Medoii", Brook-lymN. Application April 1, 1940, Serial No. '327,371
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to a new and improved bathroom iixture and more particularly to a decorative and protective device for toilet paper rolls and toilet roll wall recesses.
Presently, in bathrooms, toilet paper rolls are usually placed in recesses in the bathroom wall and are usually mounted in said recess by means of a spindle passing through the hollow spool of the toilet paper roll, the ends of said spindle being engaged in a pair of oppositedepressions in the side walls of the bathroom wall toilet paper recess. Not only .do these unprotected rolls present an unesthetic appearance, but dust co1- lects on the upper side of said toilet roll in a short time.
The main object of my invention therefore is to provide a decorative and protective shield which may be conveniently positioned over a toilet paper roll.
Another objectof my invention is to provide a decorative and protective shield for toilet paper rolls of inexpensive and simple construction, said shield being so made that it can be conveniently placed over or removed from the roll-receiving recession in a wall.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof, it being understood that the above statement of the objects of my invention is intended generally tok explain the same without limiting it in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a sectional View along line I--I of Fig. 3.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view along line 2-2 of Fig, 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view, partially broken away and partially in section, showing the connecting means in detail.
Fig. 4 is a side view of my device.
Fig. 5 is a side View of another embodiment of my device.
Fig. 6 is a front view thereof partially broken away.
Fig. '7 is a side view of still another embodiment of my device.
Referring to the 4drawing and, more particularly, to Figs. 1-4, W designates a wall having a toilet paper roll receiving recess R formed therein, said recess being of semi-cylindrical contour and having side walls 2, said side walls having a pair of oppositely disposed spindle-receiving depressions I formed therein. Heldin said depressions is a removable spindle member 3 which is of the usual type having the reduced end portions 3a and positioned on said spindle member is a toilet paper roll T having the usual central cardboard tubular member 4.
My device comprises a front wall 6 and a pair of side walls 5. In all my embodiments I have shown the front wall 6 of curvilinear shape but it is obvious that it may assume any desired shape.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs, 1-4, the lower edge of the side walls 5 project substantially below the center of the spindle member I. In this embodiment, securing means M are positioned on the inner -faces of the side walls 5. Projecting inwardly from said side walls 5 are arms 'I and 8, said arms I and 8 having cylindrical holes 9 and I Il formed therein. Slidably held by arms I and 8 through the holes 9 and III are the gripping members II terminating in the hooks I2a. Positioned on said gripping members I,I and betweenarms 'I and 8 are the compression springs I2. Knobs I3, having shaft members I4, pass through horizontal slots I5 formed in the side Walls 5 of my Idevice and are fixed to gripping members I I by means of pins I6.
The aforedescribed embodiment of my device is employed as follows:
The toilet paper roll is placed over spindle 3 and the end portions of said spindle are then inserted into the 'depressions I. The shield member is then gripped between both hands and knobs I3 pushed forward against the action of spring I2 thereby pushing hook members I2a beyond their normal position. The hook members I2@ are then -caused to engage the reduced portions 3a of the spindle 3 and the knobs I3 are thereafter released, thus `causing the entire device to be securely pressed against the wall W and held in place by means of the action of springs I'2. The springs I2 press against arms 8 and cause the vertical edges of side walls 5 to contact the wallW.
In Figs. 5 and `6 there is shown another and simpler embodiment of my device, in which the securing means consist merely of lateral extensions l1 of the side Walls 5, said lateral extensions having holes I8 formed therein. Said holes IB are adapted to be engaged by the reduced portions 3a. of the spindle member 3. Also extending from said walls 5 but normal thereto lare a pair of ange members I9 which rest against the wall W and thus distribute the pressure due to the weight of my device over a greater area and prevent cutting into the wall W.
The embodiment shown in Fig. 7 differs from the embodiment shown in Figs, 5 and 6l only in that a hook-shaped member 20 is substituted for extension member I1 so as to facilitate the positioning of my device.
In this embodiment my device may be set into position while the roll is situated in its recess R.
My protective shield may be made of any suitable material such as metal, Wood or plastic and may also be appropriately decorated.
I have shown preferred embodiments of my invention but it is clear that numerous alterations and omissions can be made without departing from its spirit.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described for use in combination with a paper roll holding spindle, said device comprising a front wall and side walls, means extending from said -side walls adapted to engage the spindle While said spindle is maintained in a paper roll recess, said means being adapted to hold the vertical edges of the side walls in contact with the Wall in which the paper roll recess is formed.
2. A device of the character described comprising a front wall and side walls, each side wall having a pair of inwardly projecting arms, said arms having aligned holes formed therein, a gripping member terminating in a hook-shaped portion slidably engaged by said arms and passing through. the said holes, a compression spring positioned on said gripping member between said arms, the side walls having slots formed therein i between the said arms and adjacent the gripping member, knobs secured to said gripping members, said knobs passing through the said slots.
