Description
March 3, 1942,- F. H. SUTHERLAND 2,275,206
PNEUMATIC BOXING GLOVE Filed Oct. 26, 1939 Patented Mar. 3, 1942 UNITED STATS PATENT OFFICE PNEUMATIC BOXING GLOVE Frederick Henery Sutherland, Five Dock, New South Wales, Australia 3 Claims.
My invention relates to the type of boxing glove wherein part of the stuiiing material usually employed, is substituted by an inflatable rubber bag which is employed in co-operative combination with a pad of resilient material.
According to my present invention two superposed inflatable bags are employed in conjunction with a resilient pad which is interposed between them.
An adaptation of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view looking to-wards the palm side of the glove.
Fig. 2, a similar View showing the back thereof.
Fig. 3, a View similar to Fig. l with part in' cross section on the line A-A of Fig. l.
Fig. 4, a sectional view showing the inatable bags and interposed pad removed from the glove.
Fig. 5, a sectional perspective View on line B-B of Fig. 4.
Similar numerals of reference are applied to the same parts throughout the figures.
The glove I includes a hand receiving member, having an integral thumb stall 2 and has attached to the rear face thereof a flexible casing 9 in which is removably arranged a padding unit comprising a rubber bag 3 having an exten` sion 4 for the thumb stall, and inflatable through an air pipe 5. The bag 3 has arranged upon its rear face a pad 4' including a casing 6 which may be of textile material or thin sheet rubber packed with granulated rubber 1, the pad, when the padding unit is inserted in the casing, extending across and along the casing adjacent the back of the hand receiving portion of the glove and being secured to the bag 3 beneath' the second rubber bag 8 which is independently inflatable through a tube I3.
The unit comprising the inflatable bags and the interposed pad is passed into the casing 9 through an opening I0 at the back of the glove near the wrist portion I I thereof. The extension 4 is pushed into the thumb stall 2 where it will be located upon the top of the thumb.
A cover skirt I2 extending from the back of the glove, is passed through the opening II) into the wrist portion of the glove. v
After the parts described have been passe through the opening I0 into the casing, the air pipes 5 and I3 are passed through holes in the glove I'and lie against the back of the wrist of the wearer.
In cases where great resiliency is desirable the pad of granulated rubber may be dispensed with and the two independently inflatable bags employed one superposed the other.
I claim:
1. A boxing glove comprising a hand receiving portion and a hollow flexible casing on the back of the hand receiving portion, a padding unit removably arranged within the casing including an inflatable member arranged adjacent the hand receiving portion of the glove, a resilient cushioning element mounted on said inflatable member, a second inflatable member secured to the cushioning element and arranged adjacent the outer Wall of the casing` and means to inflate said members independently of each other.
2. A boxing glove as claimed in claim l, in which the casing is secured to the hand receiving portion along its side and bottom edges only, the unattached top edge defining an opening for v the insertion of the padding unit.
