Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE \V. PITTMAN, Oh liUSllWlLK, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINERY FOR TWlSl'lNG FISROUS SUBSTANCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 22,715, dated January 25, 1859.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PITTMAN, ot' liushwick, in the county of Kings and State of NcwYork, have invented a new and useful improvement in Machinery for Spinning and Twisting Fibrous Substances; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of a machineillustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corrc spending parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in a certain mode of applying a flier or its equivalent, in combiuation with other mechanism herein described, whereby it made to spin a sliver or roving, and by the same operation to twist the yarn thus produced along with one or more yarns or threads which have been previously spun, and by that means a saving of half the mechanism commonly employed and halt the time commonly occupied in the spinning operation for the manufacture of twist. may be etigcted.
The invention is applicable either in the production of strands for rope, or [or cotton, woolen, or silk twist for all purposes.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to do scribe its construction and operation.
A is a suitable framing containing the bearings for the flier B and other mechanism employed. The flier B has an opening 0 through the center of each of its heads a. a, and it. contains a bobbin 0, which is titted to turn on a central spindle I), attached to one or both the heads a a in such a manner as not to interfere with the central openings 0 c. The said bobbin 0 carries yarn d d, which has been spun by the usual or any convenient, means previously to its being introduced to this machine. Nearone end of the flier there is arranged a pair of rollers l) l), which are arranged in bearings on the frame A, and between which the sliver or rovin c r', which is to be first spun and then twisted along with the yarn (l (1, passes to the tlier from a bobbin E or a suitably-arranged can. The
rollers 1) 1') are allowed to be revolved f reely by the friction of the yarn produced by the weight of the upper roller 1).
F is a spool arranged near the opposite end of the iiier to the rollers I) I), and having a positive rotary motion imparted to it by a hand f from suitable driving apparatus. The flier has also a positive rotary motion imparted to it by a band g from the driving apparatus.
The sliver or roving c, which may be drawn and prepared in the usual way before being brought to this machine, or by suitable mechanism while on its way to the machine, enters the flier through the central opening 0 in the head a next the rollers D, and thence passes through guides h h, attached to one side of the flier, and thence to the opening 0 in the other flier-head a. The yarn (Z d passes from the bobbin (l through guides i i, attached to the other side of the flier and thence to the opening a in the flier-head a, where it meets the sliver or roving e e, and from whence both pass together-t0 the bobbin 1. The revolution of the tlier causes the sliver or roving r c to be spun between itself and the rollers I) l), and at the same time causes the said sliver or roving after being spun to be twisted with the yarn rt (Z between their point. of meeting and the spool E, which by its revolution on its axis takes up the twist thus produced. It will be observed on examination that the twist given to the sliver or roving c 0 between the rollers l) D on the [tier is the reverse of that produced in twisting it with the yarn (l (Z, the direction and amount of whose previously-produced twist must also correspond with that given to the sliver or roving e c.
It wiil be obvious to all persons skilled in the spinning and twisting process that by spinning the sliver or roving c c by the 0pcration of making the twist the machinery which would otherwise require to be used to spin it is dispensed with, and the time that would be occupied in spinning it is saved, besides which the said sliver or roving is spun into yarn without a traverse motion on the flier. The flier operated in this way may be made to carry two or more spools of spun yarn, so that the sliver e 6 maybe twisted along with two or more yarns, instead of with one, as above described.
A eirenhu plate or disk wenpying the pi sition of the Ilienheml u may be enlist iluled 21s the equivalent of the llier to enrry the bobbin C, and the sliver or roving (l (i may be COIHllIClC'd through the center of the bobbin, while the yarn (Z d passes through a guide at;- tnehed to the mid disk, by which the same effect will be prod need, and by thus dispenS- inn with the lliertlie speed may be increased.
to secure by letters Patent, is
The application of the llierl or its eqnivnl lent, :oillstzlntinlly as deseribed, in combinelion with the rollers l) l) and spool 1 or other equivalent means of holding the sliver mid mlzingr up the twist produced by the flier, whereby the some operation is made to spin the sliver into yarn and twist the same with one or more other yarns simultaneously, as herein set forth.
