UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. LOCKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND FRANK HOLUB, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,276, dated May 4, 1880. Application filed March 23, 1880. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. LooKE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat in Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to meat-packers of the kind shown in Letters Patent No. 223,522, granted to me January 13, 1880, and constitutes an improvement in the organization of such machines.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation Fig. 2, a plan view with the top plate removed; Fig. 3, an elevation of the packing devices, partlyin section; and Fig. 4, a rear elevation;
The meat-receptacle A, plunger B, and plunger-rod C are similar to those shown in my patent above mentioned, and need not therefore be described.
The present machine is constructed in the following manner:
The frame is composed of top and base plates, D E, which are connected at the front of the machine by uprights F and at the rear by uprights G. The meat receptacles and plungers, of which there are two sets, work upon the uprights F in the manner shown in my former patent.
At the rear of the machine a vertical cylinder, H, has its hearings in the top and base plates, and is'driven in any suitable manner. Cam-tracks I J K are formed or secured upon the surface of this cylinder and serve to actuate levers L M N. These levers are pivoted at about their middle in an upright standard, 0, and are again pivoted at their ends in lugs or ears to Z) c on the meat-receptacle, plunger, and plunger-rod, respectively.
The apertures i j k in the levers, through which the pivot-bolts pass, are elongated, as shown, so as to give play sufficient to allow the meat-receptacle, plunger, and plunger-rod to move in vertical lines.
As each set of meat-receptacles, plungers, and plunger-rods is actuated bya separate set Machines for Packing scend together, and the meat-receptacle commences to rise after the plunger has entered its opening. The plunger then, for a moment, remains stationary, while the plunger-rod descends and the meat-receptacle rises, and then rises with the receptacle, while the plungerrod continues its descent. The plunger and plunger-rod then rise together and the operation is completed.
The above-described operation is substantially similar to that set forth in my patent above mentioned.
Two sets only of packers are shown; but two more could be operated upon the opposite side of the cam-cylinder.
The cans can be placed in the holders and ejected therefrom in any suitable manner.
I claim as of my own invention-- 1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the meat-receptacle, plunger, plunger-rod, their operating-levers, and the actuating-cams.
2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the circular cam-tracks, a series of levers operated from opposite sides of said tracks, and the meat-packin g devices operated by the lovers.
In testimony whereof I have-hereunto subscribed my name.
' CHARLES S. LOCKE.
