Description

J. WAGNER, Jr., 80 LpWAGNER. Needle for Sewing-Machines.
No. 227,192. Patented May 4,. i880.
WITNESSES NV-ENTER if? Zia? 2 I N. PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON C Ihvirn PATENT Orricnt JACOB WAGNER, JR., AND LOUIS WAGNER, OF CHICAGO, ILL., ASSIGNORS, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENT, TO WAGNER WIRE SEWING MACHINE COM- PANY, OF SAME PLACE.
NEEDLE FO R SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,192, dated May 4, 1880.
Application filed January 7, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB WAGNER, J r., and LoUIs WAGNER, both of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles for SewingMachines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to needles for machines for sewing with wire, in contradistinction to those for sewing with fibrous thread or cord, said needles being particularly adapted for use in the wire-sewing machine which is fully described in our application for Letters Patent filed February 25, 1879.
In stitching with wire it is of the utmostimportance, by reason of its stiff unyielding nature, that it should bejconducted through the material to be sewed without crimping or twisting; and to this end the object of our invention is to produce a needle which will conduct wire in a direct line from a reel or other source from whence it is drawn to and through the material to be sewed, and of a shape to readily perforate said material and protect the 2 5 free end of the wire from being bent while making such perforations.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section 0 through the center of our needle; Fig. 2, a
side elevation; Fig. 3, aperspective and Fig.
4, a vertical crosssection on the line a; m of Fig.
3, showing the oval shape of the body of the needle.
A represents a needle provided with an ovalshaped body, a, and an enlarged shank, a, by which it is secured to the needle-bar of a sewing-machine. Through the longitudinal center or axis and from end to end of the needle thus formed is bored or otherwise made a perforation, b, which serves as a guide and conductor for the wire 0 toward the point (I, so that it may be continuously fed to and carried through the material to be sewed. The point at is formed at one side of said central perforation, b, and projects in front of the point of termination of said perforation, so that the wire that may protrude from the same will be shielded when said point is perforating the material to be stitched. '50
Although we prefer to have the body of our needle oval-shaped and provided with the projecting point d, we do not limit ourselves to this specific construction, for the body may be round and the perforation terminate in the point of the needle without departing from our invention, the essential feature of which is a needle for sewing-machines through which a wire may be fed to the material in a direct line.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The needle herein described, provided with the central longitudinal perforation or wire passage, b, and the point 01, formed at one side of said central longitudinal perforation, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JACOB WAGNER, JR. LOUIS WAGNER.
