Description
Jan. 27, 1942. H. A. BERKMAN CYLINDER DRESSING TOOL Filed March 8, 1940 Patented Jan. 27, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CYLINDER. DRESSING TOOL Herbert A. Berkman, Chicago, Ill. assignor to Zim Manufacturing Company, a corporatiou of Illinois Applicatiou Mal'ch 8, 1940, Serial N0. 322,933
ICI. 51-1842) 6 Claims.
In my prior Patent N0. 2136350 dated November 8 1938, I have illustrated a 11001 for removing ridges which form in engine eylinders by reason of the fast that the pistons do not travel clear to the ends of the cylinders. Viewed in one of its aspects, the present invention may be said to have for its object 120 improve the construction of that tool while retaining the principle of operation thereof. In the patent the tool is shown as being of the reamer type. Instead of an eclged cutter an abrading element o1 hone may be employed. Viewed in another of its aspects, the present invention may be saicl to have for its object to modify the tool of the aforesaid patent to enable it successfully to grind or hone the interior of a cylinder.
The various features of novelty whereby my invention is charactefized Will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of my invention and of iI;s objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection With the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of one of my improved tools, equipped with an abrading element or hone; Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a side view of a fragment of the tool, looking at the same from a point to the right of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a vlew, showing a still smaller fragment of the tool, and showing the side diametrically opposite that appearing in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 2, with the swinging holder for the blacle or hone and the adjustable plate on which the holder is mounted omitted.
Referring 130 the drawing, I represents a disk having a tubular stem 2 rising from the center thereof; there being a long holt 3 extending through the stem and. disk and into screwthreadecl engagement with a spider 4 underlying the plate I. As in my aforesaicl patent, the spider cooperates with fiat shoes 5 distributed around the same and adapted to be spread apart by the spider 130 clamp the plate I firmly Within a cylinder, with the tubular post 2 coaxial with the cylinder and projecting from the latter. The only new thing in this part of the tool is that the post is shown as being quite long; the purpose being to permit the abrading tool o1 hone to be moved lengthwise of the same while being rotated, and thus prevent the cutting of grooves in the cylinder.
Overlying and resting upon I;he disk I is a plate 6 almost as large as the disk and having a sleevelike hub I of consiclerable length rising therefrom and surrounding the tubular post; I;he hub being considerably shorter than the post, so that I;he plate 5 and its hub may not only be rotated about the post but may also be moved up and down along the same, through a considerable distance.
The lower portion of the hub I has flat peripheral surfaces 8 While in the upper end are diametrically opposed bayonet slots 9 opening upwardly and adapted to receive plus or projections on the suitable sleeve wrench which may be lowered in a position surrounding the post and which serves to turn the plate 6 and also to raise and lower the same.
Overlying and resting upon the p1ate 6 is another plate I0 which is more nearly in the form of a complete disk than is the platze 6. The plate 6 is provided in the upper side With a radial groove II and the plate I0 has on the under sicle a. tongue or rib I2 that fits slidably into this groove. There is also a large central winolow I4 in the plate I0 through Which the hub I extends; the Width of this window being equal to the distance between two opposed parallel flat faces on the hub I. The long edges bounding ehe window are parallel to the tongue or rib I2, so that the tongue- I2 cooperating With the groove II and the window HI cooperating with I;he flat sided hub, both serve to prevent relative turning movements be tween the p1ates 6 and I0 While permitting the plate I0 to slide radially of the post upon the plate 6. The p1ates 6 and I0may be fastened together by a screw I5 passing down through an elongated slot I6 in the plate I0 and into a screw-threaded hole I'I in the plate 6; the slot I6 being parallel With the groove I I and the longsides of the winolow I4. Therefore, When the screw is loosened, the platze I0 maybe slid back and fo1thand, in order to lock the plates together against relative sliding movements, it.is only necessary to tighten I;he screw.
At one end of the plate I0 is a thick arm I8 connected thereto by a suitable hinge pin I9 that is parallel I:he post 2. A long section at the free end of the arm is reduced in thickness, as indicated ab 20, finger-like proportions, and lies on top of the plate I0. Fixed on the plate I0 behind the part 20 is a socket 2I in which is seated a compression spring 22 that protrudes from the socket and bears a%ainst the rear face of the flnger member 20. On the plate I0 in front of the finger 20 is an eccentric 24 or, rather, a cylindrical head or button having a stem 25 arranged eccentrically thereof so that 21 sei: in a metal shoe 28 having a rearwardly projecting ear 29. In 1;he outer or front edge of the arm I8 is a wide notch 313 extending from 1:0p to bottom, and extending rearwardly from this notch into the b0dy of the arm is a pocket 3I. The shoe in its holder stands upright in the notch, While the ear extends into the pocket 3I. A pin 32 extends through the ear and the solid portions of the arm on opposite sides of the ear to support the hone for swinging movements abou1; an
axis parallel wi1sh the 1:0p of the disk I, namely a1; right angles 130 the axis of the post 2. The hone does not bottom in the notch When it stands parallel with the post, so tha1; 113 is free 110 rock through a limited angle to adjust itself to the face of the cylinder Wall.
I1: Will be seen that by placing 1;he spring 22 behind the free end of the arm I8, With the hone or cutter located at abou1: the middle of 1;he arm, the spring exer1zs a powerful leverage 011 the work-engaging element and may therefore be much weaker or softer than is a spring lying near the hinge. This is made possible loy employing as a supporting member for the arm I8 a plate Which is alrnost a complete disk. Not only does this construction provide a more satisfactory control of 1;he yielding pressure on the work-engaging element than in my earlier device laut, because of the broad bearing that the plate I0 has on the plate 6, the device as a whole is much sturdier and in less danger of chatfaering than is 1she case where the work-engaging element is carried from a series 013 arms, one supporting another, With the work-engaging element at one end of ehe series and the arm a1; the other end of the series being rotatably supported by the post. II: Will also be seen tha1: by supporting the work-engagihg element so tha1; it may rock in a plane radial 1;0 the cylinder which is being trea1sed, and moving the element lengthwise of the cylinder as lt is being rotated, about 1:he axis of the cylinder, the surface which is being treated will always be left smooth and free from grooves or scratches.
While I have illustrated and described With particularity only a single preferred form of my invention, I do not desire 110 be limited 1:0 the exact structural details thus illustrated and described: but intend 130 cover all forms and arrangements which come within the definitions of my invention consticuting the appended olaims.
I claim:

A machine for dressing the interior of a cylinder comprising a member adapted to be secured in a cylinder, an element rotatable on said member about the axis of the cylinder, a 1:001 holder movably mounted on said member, and a long work-engaging 17001 mounted on said holder for rocking movements about an axis lying behind the same remote from both ends and at right angles to the axis of the cylinder.
