Description

F. COLTON.
g r BEDSTEAD. No. 22,706. I PATENTED JAN. 25, 1859.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS COTTON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PORTABLE BEDSTEAD.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 22,706, dated January 25, 1859.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS COTTON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Portable Bedstead; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
D/1"(nU2n(/s.-Figiire I is a view of my portable bedstead, when extended and ready for use. In this drawing A A represent the central stand, B, B, the end supports, C, C the side rails, D, a mattress or bedding.
Fig. II is a view of the same, when folded. A A represent the central stand, B, B the end supports, C, C the side rails, D, a mattress or bedding, E, E, E, E, the straps forming the bottom of the bedstead, and attached to the end supports (B, B) by depressing which they are tightened and held in their place.
Fig. III is a sectional drawing of my improved portable bedstead. A, A show the central stand, B, B the end supports, C, C the side rails, to which the end supports B B are joined. F represents the bottom of the bedstead, formed of the straps (E, E, E E Fig. II), said straps being tightened and held rmly in their place by depressing the end supports B B. Cr, G, show the points at which the side rails (c, c) are hinged. The nature of my invention consists in constructing a bedstead, which shall be easily adjusted, enabling persons using it not only to fold the bedstead itself, butthe bedding with it. It may also be used as an invalid bcdstead, by raising or lowering the end supports (B, B).
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and opera'h tion.
U0nStructz'0n.-I provide a central stand (A A) to which the side rails (0 c) are attached, by hinging or fastening them to this central stand (A A) at a given point, (Cr, Gr Fig. III). Two end supports (B, B) are joined to these side rails (c, c) at the point (H Fig. III). A series of straps (E, E, E, E, Fig. II) are fastened to these end supports (B B) in such a manner, that the line of tension, shall be below the point (G, G) at which the side rails (c, 0) are hinged.
Operation-The bedstead being folded up, as shown in Drawing II, in order to open it and prepare it for use the end supports (B B) are depressed, and by this depression the straps are tightened and held in their place, forming the botto-m of the bedstead. To use it as an invalid bedstead the end supports (B B) are raised and rest upon the central stand (A). In order to fold the bedstead, the end supports (B B) are raised, rested upon the central stand (A) and the upper ends fastened together by a band of india-rubber or any other material.
I do not claim a jointed bedstead, so that when not in use it may be folded. Nor do I desire to claim constructing an invalid bed stead, in which the head or feet of the invalid may be raised or lowered, by elevating or depressing either of the end supports. Nor am I desirous of claiming the use of side-rails, hinged at a given point, to enable them to be folded, but- I claim- The arrangement of the stand, rails, straps, and end supports, the whole forming a new and improved article of manufacture, namely, an improved portable bedstead.
FRANCIS COTTON.
