1 Claim. (Cl. 'i2-'11) This invention relates to grating structures such as are used for reinforcing heavy duty flooring for decks and bridges, subway or vault covers, loading platforms and the like.
Grating structures of the type referred to are made of metallic elements which are assembled in the neld, and subsequently filled with concrete, grout, or other illling material.
In my Patent N'o. 2.089.891, dated August l0, 1937, there is disclosed and claimed a grating structure comprising a plurality of series of rolled shapes which are assembled in inter-locked relationship. The foot portions of the supporting or primary bars of said structure are grooved on both side faces thereof to receive the edges of plates which extend between the said bars to receive concrete, grout, or other filling material.
Heretofore the erection of grating structures` of the type to which the present invention applies has required the laying of the plates, or .pans as they are referred to in the art, on top of the relatively narrow shelf provided by the feet of the supporting or primary bars and the welding together of these elements. This is an expensive process and even after completion considerable ditilculty has been experienced due to the tendency of the plates, or s'o-called pans to spring up between the locations of the welds, whereby they are no longer in intimate contact with the feet of the supporting or primary bars, thereby forming openings of considerable size. These openings permit the escape of the filling material and in some cases cause considerable damage.
Often the manufacturers and/or contractors have been compelled to pay for repainting surfaces below the grating structure which have been discolored or disfigured by leakage of the iilling material.
It is among the objects of the present invention to eliminate the escape of the illling material used in grating structures of the class described.
It is another object of the present invention to provide in a grating structure a series of supporting or primary bars, the bottoms of which support and are connected to the edges of the plates or pans which support the iilling material.
The invention, then, comprises the features hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the claim, the following description and the annexed drawing setting forth in detail a certain illustrative embodiment of the invention, this being indicative of but one ci the number of ways in which the principles of the invention may be employed.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 2 designates a series of parallel longitudinally extending supporting or primarypbars or web members which form part of a grating structure whichy includes other bars interlocked therewith, for example in the manner of my Patent No. 2,089,891.
According to the teachings of the present invention, the feet 4 of each of the primary bars or web members 2 are provided with widened base portions 5 in the manner of a conventional I- beam, but differs therefrom in the provision on either side of the web 6 ofa continuous'projection 1 which is adapted to overlie the upper portions or faces 8 of the widened base portions 6 and to form therebetween a shallow groove I0. Preferably the upper portions or faces 8 of the widened base portion 5 are slightly angular, or at less than right-angles to the axis of the web 8 of the supporting or primary bars 2.
The plate or so-called pan extending between each pair of the primary bars or web members 2 is designated hereinafter at I2 and isA bent up'- wardly adjacent its edges to follow the surface of the upper portions or faces 8 of the bases 5 and to occupy the shallow grooves I0 formed Abetween the latter and the overhanging 'projections 1.
The wide bottom shelf provided by the upper portion or face 8 of the widened base portions 5 positively supports the edges of the so-called pans" and prevents dislodgment ci' the latter from the shelf. The overhanging projections 1 are of such cross section as to enable their ready deformity at intervals to grip the edges of the pans and prevent lateral movement thereof vas well as vertical movement of their edges.
While I have shown and described one speciiic embodiment of the present invention, it will be seen that I do not wish to be limited exactly thereto, since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention,^as d'ened by the following claim.
I claim:
A grating structure for flooring and the like substantial parallelism, thefoot portion of each of said members being of material widthand having on each of the inner sides thereof an outwardly tapering surface, a continuous, relatively 5 Y members disposed with their web portions in contact with the outwardly tapering surfaces of the adjacent inner sides of the foot portions thereof. whereby said plate will retain filling material disposed between said members, said plate being of sumcient width to permit the edges' thereof to underlie the adjacent continuous ribs of said members, said continuous ribs being susceptible to ready deformation into rigid gripping relationship with the edges of said plate to there- 10 by prevent the displacement thereof;
