In furniture show rooms it is a custom, in order to `save space, to display lthe hea-d and foot membersy of a 'bed in a close-coupled relation by the employment lof special side rails which are short in comparison with the regular side rails of the bed. An important object of the present invention is to 4provide improved means for dressing such a displayed bed to give it a neat, attractive appearance closely simulating, except for .its shortness, theappearance of a completely made-up bed with mattress, bolster and spread. Another object rof the invention is to -provide such a dressing means designed for quick and convenient installation and removal and .designed also to preserve its shape and unity while in service and also duringhandling and storage.v Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.

Referring rst to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the head and foot members I and 2 respectively, of a bed are coupled by short-rails 3. Each short-rail comprises posts 4 of the bed have recesses 5 containing rigid anchoring pins 6. For engagement with said pins each short-rail has hooks 'I projecting from its opposite ends and having elongated shanks 8 screwthreaded at their inner ends and con"- nected by a turnbuckle 9 for tightening the hooks upon the anchoring pins. The hooks and adjacent portions of the shanks are flattened and said shank portions extend through apertures I0 in the ends of the short-rails shaped to t said shank portions and hold the hooks against turning when the turnb-uckles are screwed. The bed members I and 2 are Vmade of wood and, in order to prevent scratching of the corner posts by the metal short-rails each rail has felt strips II secured to its opposite ends in the region of the hooks to bear against said posts.

A dressing unit is supported upon the upper edges of the short rails. This unit includes a deck, a bolster-simulating frame secured to the deck and a spread covering the deck and said frame and secured to them. Tlie'deck comprises a rectangular wooden frame 4I2 having spaced fore-and-aft extending reinforcing strips I3 and a diaphragm I4 of stout fabric stretched across the upper side of the` frame and tacked thereto,

as at I5. Fabric reinforcing strips I6, some exa rectangular frame of angle-iron. The corner tending crosswise of the frame and others longitudinally thereof, underlie the diaphragm land are also tacked to the frame in a taut condition. The bolster-simulating frame is located over the rear margin of the deck and comprises a row of wooden risers Il spa-ced along said margin and secured to the rear portion of the frame and to the diaphragm, and wooden strips I8 connecting the risers and secured thereto. These strips are secured in notches in the risers. The endmost risers of the row are spaced inward from the opposite side edges of the deck. All of the risers are of the same size and of a contour to give a desired yconventional cross sectional shape to the bolster-simulating frame. A sheet I9 of stiif cardboard is fitted over the upper edges and the front and rear edges of the risers and fining the layer and tacked or otherwise secured to the deck frame. Said sheet 2| extends beneath the bolster frame but the batting is there omitted. A bedspread 22 covers the upper surface of the upholstered deck as well as the outer sides thereof and also covers the bolster frame. At the rear of the deck frame said spread is tacked to the frame, as at 23. The spread is tucked beneath the forward strip I8 of the bolster frame and tacked to said strip along with the diaphragm |4 and the sheet 2|. Along the front and side margins of the deck the spread is secured to the sheet 2| by means of adhesive 24. Thereby the spread is held smooth over the deck and the bolster frame. At the upper side of the bolster frame there is a layer 25 of cotton batting vbetween the cardboard sheet I9 and the spread 22 to upholster the bolster frame. The width of the spread is such as to provide it with liberal side margins to drape over the short-rails and conceal them, and the fore-and-aft length of the spread is sulicient to provide it with a liberal forward margin to drape from the forward edge of the deck. This forward drape is particularly desirable when the foot of the bed is of an open structure exposing the unit at the front.

When the dressing unit is in use-it is supported upon the short-rails 3, the opposite side members of the deck frame resting upon the upper edges of the rails. In order to prevent lateral displacement of the unit upon the rails the said side members of the deck frame are provided with rigid, depending studs 26 spaced therealong, and the rails have apertures 2'! to receive said studs. The combined depth of the rails and the upholstered deck are such as to dispose the upper surface of the deck at approximately the level of the upper surface of a mattress supported in a conventional bed. The dressing unit, designed and mounted as described, gives the displayed bed the neat and attractive appearance of a well-made bed and gives a prospective customer a good idea of how the bed will appear when made up for service. The unit can also be employed advantageously for displaying bedspreads for sale. Due to the manner in which the spread is secured and the sturdy construction of the deck and bolster frames the spread is constantly held smooth. All parts of the unit are furthermore secured together so that they will not become disarranged in handling or storage. The unit is readily removable from the bed display assembly by merely lifting it tor free the studs 2B from the holes in the short-rails.

Figs. to 9 inclusive show a bed display means similar in general to that just described but with detai1 modifications. Here, in the dressing unit, the diaphragm Ida is made of stii cardboard, the deck and bolster are unprovided with upholstery, the brace pieces |3a of the deck frame are made of sufficient depth to support the diaphragm, and the spread 22 is secured directly to the diaphragm by the adhesive 24. Otherwise the construction of the unit is similar to that prek viously described.

In Figs. 7, 8 and 9 the short rails are designed for coupling head and foot members |a and 2a respectively, made of metal. The corner posts of such members are commonly provided with rigid fin-like hooks 28 for coupling to the side rails of the bed. For attachment to such hooks a modified form of short-rail 3a is here provided. This rail has a clamping plate or strip 29 rigidly secured by bolts 30 to its lower margin and extending beyond the opposite ends of the rail.

In opposed relation to the strip 29 there is a clamping plate or strip 3| of the same length as the strip 29. At points suitably spaced inward from the opposite ends of said strips there are two thumb screws 32. The Shanks of these screws extend loosely through apertures 33 in the strip 3| and are secured into threaded apertures 34 in the strip 29. Shank portions of said screws, between said strips, are adapted to enter the hooks 28. Then, by tightening the screws, the strips or plates may be clamped to the flat, iin-like hooks to couple the short-rail firmly to the head and foot members of the bed.

What I claim is:

l. A bed display unit including a deck comprising a iiat rigid rectangular frame to rest upon the upper edges of the short-rails of a bed exhibition coupling, and a diaphragm comprising a sheet of material extending over the upper surface of said frame and permanently secured thereto in a flat smooth condition; a structure formed to simulate a bolster comprising a frame structure rigid with said deck frame and extending along one of the longitudinal margins of the deck and projecting above the latter, and a sheet of stiff material covering the upper side of said bolster frame and permanently secured thereto; and a spread covering said deck and said bolstersimulating structure and secured in a smooth condition over both in the unit and tucked and secured between the forward under margin of the bolster frame and the deck frame and having free margins to drape over the outer sides of said rails, whereby said unit will simulate a dressed short mattress and bolster and all of the recited parts of the unit will remain permanently and accurately assembled in the unit when the latter is on or off the short-rails.

2. A bed display unit including a deck comprising a flat rigid rectangular frame to rest upon the upper edges of the short-rails of a bed exhibition coupling, and a diaphragm comprising a sheet of material extending over the upper surface of said frame and permanently secured thereto in a nat smooth condition; a structure formed to simulate a bolster comprising a frame structure rigid with said deck frame and extending along one of the longitudinal margins of the deck and projecting above the latter, and a sheet of stiff material covering the upper side of said bolster frame and permanently secured thereto; a spread covering said deck and said bolster-simulating structure and permanently secured in a smooth condition over both and tucked and permanently secured between the forward under margin of the bolster frame and the deck frame and having free margins to drape over the outer sides of said rails; a thin layer of padding between the upper side of the bolster-simulating structure and the spread and a thin layer of padding between said diaphragm and spread, for the purpose set forth; and downwardly project ing studs rigidly borne by the deck frame and arranged to releasably engage said rails to prevent edgewise displacement of the unit thereon, whereby said unit will simulate a dressed short mattress and bolster and all of the recited parts of the unit will remain permanently and accurately assembled in the unit when the latter is on or oil the short-rails.

3. A bed display unit including a deck comprising a ilat rigid rectangular frame to rest upon the upper edges of the short-rails of a bed exhibition coupling, and a diaphragm comprising a sheet of material extending over the upper surface of said frame and permanently secured thereto in a flat smoothcondition; a structure formed to simulate a bolster comprising a frame structure rigid with said deck frame and extending along one of the longitudinal margins of the deck and projecting above the latter, and a sheet of stii material covering the upper side of said bolster frame and permanently secured thereto; a spread covering said deck and said bolstersimulating structure and permanently secured in a smooth condition over both and having free margins to drape over the outer sides of said rails; and a thin layer of padding between the upper side of the bolster/simulating structure and the spread and a thin layer of padding between said diaphragm and spread for the purpose set forth, whereby said unit will simulate a dressed short mattress and bolster and all of the recited parts of the unit will remain permanently and accurately assembled in the unit when the latter is on or off the short-rails.

4. A bed display unit including a deck comprising a at rigid rectangular frame for support upon the short-rails of a bed exhibition coupling, and a diaphragm comprising a sheet of material extending across said frame and permanently secured thereto in a at smooth condition; a rigid structure formed to simulate a bolster rigid with said deck frame and extending along one of the longitudinal margins of the deck and projecting above the latter; a spread covering said deck and said bolster frame and permanently secured in a smooth condition over both; and downwardly projecting studs rigidly borne by the deck frame to releasably engage said rails to prevent edgewise displacement of the unit thereon, whereby said unit will simulate a dressed short mattress and bolster and all of the recited parts of the unit will remain permanently and accurately assembled in the unit when the latter is on or oir the short-rails.

5. A bed display unit including a. deck cornprising a flat rigid rectangular frame for support upon the short-rails of a bed exhibition coupling, and a diaphragm comprising a sheet of material extending across said frame and permanently secured thereto in a flat smooth condition; a rigid structure formed to simulate a bolster rigid with said deck frame extending along one of the longitudinal margins of the deck and projecting above the latter; and a spread covering said deck and said bolster-simulating structure and secured in a smooth condition over both, whereby said unit will simulate a dressed short mattress and bolster and all of the recited parts of the unit will remain permanently and accurately assembled in the unit when the latter is on or oil the short-rails.
