My invention relates to new and useful improvements in cigar boxes or the like and has for its principal object the provision of novel means for supporting or holding the lid or cover in open position for display purposes or for facilitating the positioning of the box on a counter, case or the like or removing the same therefrom.

A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of novel means normally carried by the lid or cover and adapted to be secured to the body of the box for supporting the lid or cover in open position.

Another object of the invention consists in the provision of adhesive tabs or strips carried by the lid or cover and adapted to be adhesively connected to the end portions of the body of the box for holding the lid or cover in open position.

With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and arrangement of parts, described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, as they now appear to me, it will be understood that such changes may be made as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawing 1 indicates the body portion of the box and 2 the lid or cover hingedly connected to the body by means of the flexible strip or hinge 3 preferably formed of fabric. The strip or hinge 3 is adhesively connected to the outer face of the lid or cover at 4 and adhesively connected to the outer face of the rear wall of the body I at 5, the space between the points 2 is in what might be termed its lowered open position. Adhesively connected to the outer face of the lid or cover 2, and overlapping an edge portion of the flexible strip or hinge 3, is a strip 6 of fabric, paper or similar material and the ends of this strip are folded around theside edges of the lid or cover 2 to extend parallel with the inner face of the lid or cover, as shown quite clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and to form the flap I having adhesive on their inner faces for a purpose which will be later apparent. It will be understood that these flaps 1 are not connected to the inner face of the lid or cover, but their ends are normally positioned within loops, indicated at 8, which are secured to the lid or cover.

When the lid or cover 2 is in' the closed position, as shown more particularly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, it will be sealed by a strip or stamp 9 along one end thereof.

When it is desired to open the box the seal 9 is broken and the lid or cover may be raised into the position shown in Fig. 3 and access may be had to the contents within the body portion.

Very often it is desired, when the box is to be placed in a case or on a counter or the like to use the lid or cover for display purposes or as a handle portion to be grasped for moving or removing the box. When this is done it is desired to support the lid or cover in vertical position, as shown quite clearly in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing. With the lid or cover in the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing the flaps 1 may be released or removed from the loops 8 and swung to project beyond the edges of the lid or cover. Then the lid or cover will be lowered into the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, the strip or hinge 3 folding into the position shown in Fig. 5. When thus lowered the flaps l are positioned to extend parallel with the end portions of the body, as shown more particularly in Fig. 4 of the drawing, and secured to the end portions by the adhesive on the inner faces of the flaps. By these flaps the lid or cover is secured to the body portion and held in the vertical position shown. Any desired display. might be applied to the inner face of the lid or cover and, as stated before, a person may grasp this lid or cover, in its vertical position, for moving the box around a counter, to remove the same from the counter, to place the box into or remove the same from a display case, or for other purposes which will be readily apparent.

I am aware that it is old to provide members for holding the lid or cover of a cigar box or the like in vertical position, but so far as I am aware it is new with me to provide means carried by and forming a part of the lid or cover and adapted to be connected to the body of the box to form a connection directly between the lid or cover and body.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A box including a body, a lid or cover, a flexible strip connected to the lid or cover and to the body with a free portion therebetween, said free portion permitting the lid or cover to be normally positioned horizontally to close the body or to be raised into vertical position and then lowered with respect to the body, a strip secured to and carried by the lid or cover and having normally free projecting end portions, and means receiving said free end portions to normally hold them parallel with a face of the lid or cover, said free end portions being removable from the holding means to be positioned to be secured to the body when the lid or cover is in its lowered vertical position.

2. A box including a body, a lid or cover, a flexible strip connected to the lid or cover and to the body with a free portion therebetween, said free portion permitting the lid or cover to be normally positioned horizontally to close the body or to be raised into vertical position and then lowered with respect to the body, a strip secured to and carried by the lid or cover and having normally free projecting end portions, and loops carried by the lid or cover to receive the free end portions of the strip and normally holding them in parallel position relative to a face of the lid or cover, said free end portions being removable from the loops for connection to the body for supporting the lid or cover in vertical position.

3. A box including a body, a lid or cover, a flexible strip connected to the lid or cover and to the body with a free portion therebetween, said free portion permitting the lid or cover to be normally positioned horizontally to close the body or to be raised into vertical position and then lowered with respect to the body, a strip extending parallel with the outer face of the lid or cover and secured thereto, said strip having normally free projecting end portions folded around the ends of the lid or cover to extend parallel with the inner face thereof, and loops carried by the lid or cover to receive the folded free end portions of the strip, said free end portions being readily removable from the loops for connection to the body for supporting the lid or cover in vertical position.

4. A box including a body, a lid or cover, a flexible strip connected to the lid or cover and to the body with a free portion therebetween, said free portion permitting the lid or cover to be normally positioned horizontally to close the body or to be raised into vertical position and then lowered with respect to the body, a strip secured to and carried by the lid or cover and having a normally free projecting end portion, and means receiving said free end portion to normally hold it parallel with a face of the lid or cover, said free end portion being removable from the holding means to be positioned to be secured to the body when the lid or cover is in its lowered vertical position.
